Now I'm reading "Scars of Sweet Paradise". It's a biography about Janis Joplin. It's a great book, it's not just a bio on Janis, it's also a bio of what was going on in the Haight/Ashbury music scene in the late 60s when Janis lived there. If you're into Janis and/or that whole late 60s San Francisco music scene (including The Grateful Dead) you might want to read this book. I highly recommend it. I LOVE this book! I also read "Love, Janis" which is written by her sister and found that there are some discrepancies between the two but then again, how much did her sister really know being young and far away...

I worked for a Very Artsy Fartsy scientist (reminiscent of Doc Brown...."great scott" ) He invented a micro Hydro generator.... anyway, this guy was a flower child for SURE!! quite a hoot. He brought up growing in the West, and go'n to school w/ John Fogarty 'n all that. He told me that it was nothing to have to CHOOSE from go'n to see the Doors, to Hendrix, to Janis...u get my point, in the same NITE!!! can u imagine! My eyes just about fell out!!! I asked him what it was like then...... Response: It was the sixies, Man, (pointing a finger to the side with his eyebrows askew).....what am I suppose to remember, Man? #lmao# so i may have to read that book Sonya, cause on San Fran; he gave me nuttin'

One thing that seems sure about Janis is that she was an extremely complicated person and I don't think there were many people (if any) who knew the "real" Janis. She seemed to put on a variety masks in her relationships with people...which makes sense because of how insecure and vulnerable she is described to have been. I think it's interesting that Janis lied to the press and told them that her parents kicked her out at age 14 which was not true...I think that just shows how hard it really is to know the truth about her when Janis herself lied to people about her past. I've got about a hundred pagers left to read. I'm at the part where she has moved to NYC with Big Brother & the Holding Co. and they are in the process of recording an album but they're having problems b/c the band can't get their shit together. I would definitely like to read her sister's book and see what she has to say.

man, I can't wait until exams are over! I'll be able to check out books since the library is only open for study now...
I was looking for books they might have and they have 4 copies of The Great Gatsby all IN! it's amazing how the public libraries that have the book only have like one copy and a high school has 4 in stock... they also have The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time as well as A Spot of Bother I think it was. I think I'll do some browsing for other books there... =0)

I really want to read the Janis book. I just finished Jenna Jameson's autobiography called "How To Make Love Like A Porn Star". It was actually REALLY good. She had a messed up life but pulled it all together to be extreamly successful.

... I was thinking... some of you have good taste in books... and I've been in a less picky mood about books and authors... and since I have a limited source of who's a good writer... I was thinking of making a list of books to check out when ever... anyway what are your top favorite authors, books or plays at the moment...or ever not many of my friends like to read a lot...the ones that do read books that could be found on the book of the month in the youth section... I did get one referral for a book or something called twilight...but it's a vampire romance... so...probably not my type #blink# ...

Lovely Bones was an amazing book! Into the Wild by Jack Kerouac is one I also recommend.

I read Into the Wild, but it was written by John Krakauer , very cool story. Are we talking about the same book? Such a brave guy--- to truly live by his strong beliefs.

Yes, you are totally right about the author. I really want to see the movie as well to see how closely they relate it to the book. I am usually disapointed if I read the book first then see the movie. But, it got good reviews, so here's hoping.

I didn't eeven hear that there is a movie yet, lol. That's cool! I read it back in '98 actually, when I was heading out on my own solo adventure. I headed out west with a one way ticket to the mountains in CO, and didn't know anyone..... that book just happened to be what I was reading. I try to read books BEFORE they come out onto movie, because like you said, I tend to be dissapointed with how they carry it out. The one story that I thought did a great job, was White Oleander. The movie followed the book pretty well. Lemme know what you think of the Into The Wild movie!

I am kinda suprised you haven't heard about the "Into The Wild" movie. Sean Penn directed it and Emile Hersh (the kid from Lords of Dogtown and Girl Next Door) stars as Chris McCandless. I will let you know how it is when it comes out on video, it is done in the theaters and didn't come near me.

I just submitted a request to have it sent to my local library from a different library in the county. I just finished The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson and started reading Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. Gabby didn't you say you recently read Naked Lunch? I've never read anything by Burroughs. I'm having to get used to his writing style, but I'm intrigued. I've never read anything like this before.
