There is a reason we are all here. Blind Melon being that. The band has touched many, and continues to do so. My question is, what has Shannon's writings done for you, personally? Helped you through bad times? Opened up your mind to a whole new genre of music?
Personally, The first Blind Melon CASSETTE I bought was Nico. That's right, I was never really introduced to them until after the death of R. Hoon. I heard once, and fell in love. The raw, raspy, high-end pitch of the man's voice almost caused me to slam into the car infront of me. Damn red lights...
Ever since that day, I have done nothing but collect. Anything and everything (even remotely related to Shannon/Melon) I pick up...
The man's lyrics touched me in a way that has personally changed they way I write my own music. He's done a lot for me, as has Brad.

My personal Shannon moment was late late one night when I was listening to I Wonder loud in my headphones. In between the slow, soft intro and the beginning of the rest of the song, I heard something. So I played it back, up even louder in my ears, and I heard Shannon whispering "gotta get me outta here man, gotta get me outta here." I immediately started to cry...tears instantly fell. It felt like Shannon's spirit had just been with me, sitting on my shoulders, that he was just WITH me at that moment, in my room, just him and I. I can't begin to describe it, and I'm even a writer. That whole night I stayed up listening to I Wonder on repeat, curled up in my closet and thinking... In the millions upon millions of times I've listened to I Wonder I had never ever heard it. At first I was disgusted with myself...how could I have missed that? Especially since it has been one of my favorite Melon songs for a long time. Then I started thinking that maybe I missed it for a reason. Maybe I just needed to hear it at that point in my life, which was a hard period of my life I was going through. Then, I answered my own question. The question I had asked myself and my melonheads so many times before: why would God take someone like Shannon from this world? Because maybe he knew that fans of his music needed to be able to feel his presence. That way, he could be anywhere at any time, whomever it is who needs him. Because if Shannon were still alive, I would have never felt him there that night when I discovered the I Wonder whispers. I still get the chills thinking about it. That's what he's done for me. :angel:I love you, Shannon. z

I believe Shannon wrote I Wonder while in rehab. It's quite obvious when you listen/read through the lyrics.
I remember my first rehab... "get me outta here" suits well.

I read somewhere he had. I love learning of all those little quirks about a song...how it was written and other obsure information about it. My fave tibit of info: he used to play Change on the porch for his mom, Nel. Aww z

Man this man gave me hope when I saw no point in living, he was there for me when nobody else was (even if it was just his music), he brought me together with a bunch of beautiful creatures who grew into close friends, and now it's almost like a second family... He gave me the music that makes me feel fine and the desire to do my best to decorate each dying day...
He gave me new life, literally.

Well mostly Shannon showed me a sense of rebellion and fun. Never afraid to throw up the middle finger or clench a fist, still Shannon was the first with a ready smile and a scheming glint in his eye. He was never a tragic figure, and though he left this plain of existance far too soon, we can learn much from the way he lived each day. Shannon, an inspiration, a beautiful soul, and more than any of that a real human being.....Love you Shan, hope you are running around on the clouds.....naked....... :booty:

Zoe your story sent chills down my back....
Shannons lyrics mean so much to me and his vocal ability and style are one that I hold in the highest regards.
I started listening to Melon in high school, I loved the no rain video and spent my hard earned crap Mcdonalds paycheck and got the CD among other things. I always wanted something pure when it came to music, I hate manufactured garbage. Shannons lyrics are his own and pure and beautiful, you can relate to what he is saying because you have been there or have been somewhere similar. Sometimes after listening to Melon I feel like I can go out there and make some huge difference in the world, and sometimes I just sit there and strum along on my guitar with my eyes closed listening. I have had a shitty life up until now and I won't go into much detail, however without that shoulder of Shannon's voice, and the Music of my other favriote (tori amos) I don't think I would have made it though all the crap sane.

i can't say he's inspired or touched me any more than a handful of 4 or 5 other artists, but yeah there've been times in my life like everybody here i guess where i'd be listening to melon for weeks on end and it just fit for me at that point in time... and as someone who writes as well i'd never really come across a style like shannon's before but i fell in love with it, it's very raw and real, it doesn't seem to me like he'd be sitting there scratching and revising and editing, it feels more like he just sat and wrote whatever came and i think the emotion and the reality of it really come across.
