well I recommended the two I did because thats when he got a backing band which made his sound more "colorful" anyways thats just my opinion his first two albums are pretty much just him and his guitar. Not saying they're bad but it took me listening to his later albums to really get into his earlier stuff, thats just me though. totally agree with you Bogo... i still cant understand why they keep saying his earlier stuff is best, like either/or, that stuff doesnt sound that special to me... but X/O and Figure 8 are fantastic, and New Moon has shades of brilliance in it with songs like Angel In the Snow, and my favourite Smith tune Going Nowhere... Other favourite songs include Sweet Adeline, Tomorrow Tomorrow, Junk Bond Trader, Son Of Sam and Pitseleh... I just bought From a Basement on a Hill, havent listened to it yet but i hope its good....

I bought New Moon yesterday. I picked that one because it was a double album and it was only a couple dollars more than the other single albums. I'll be getting the rest soon, I really really like New Moon. Thanks for the recommendations everyone! P.S. I learned how to play The Biggest Lie on guitar last night. #smilieclap#

I've heard OF Elliot Smith a hundred times in the past, but just recently (the last few days specifically) took it upon myself to look him up on youtube. He's so intense... in his music and as a person, he's raw. But hes amazing. He's completely blown me the fuck away.
I just wanted to say that really, because i don't know anyone else that likes him.

Yeah, hes totally not my "type" of music though because hes so.... fucking unhappy. SORRY But he IS.
I mean i can listen to music like that and appreciate it for what it is but i wont make it something i'd listen to all the time or i'd start to cry haha!
But there is something ABOUT Elliot Smith that makes it okay. Yeah? Anyone agree? Or am i just talking shit here???
P.S. do any of you guys dig Nick Drake?

hes so.... fucking unhappy. But there is something ABOUT Elliot Smith that makes it okay. You're right. His music isn't happy at all, but there is a sense of hope that lies within it which is probably what makes it so great...because underneath it all you know there is much more to him than just unhappiness. I think he's a brilliant songwriter. I'm still familiarizing myself with his music so I can't wait to get even deeper into it. Personally I find his songs to be brutally honest and beautifully sad. I think anyone who has ever felt sadness or isolation can relate to his lyrics on some level. His voice is really what gets me...the delivery of the lyrics is so honest it rips your heart out - some people might wonder why anyone would want to have their heart ripped out voluntarily by music, but I personally need to listen to that type of music sometimes. My favorite music is music that I can identify with and really makes me feel something, and his music definitely does that for me. As I've been getting into him I find myself preferring the acoustic earlier stuff the most. I personally think the band sometimes takes away from the beauty of the songs. His guitar playing is like ear candy to me and a little bit of that intricacy is lost when the band gets involved. All the songs on his myspace page are right up my alley and I've been listening to Roman Candle and the Self-Titled albums a lot.

I've been watching him on youtube, i prefer it when its just him on the guitar or piano by himself. Its much more raw and he alone brings his lyrics across in such a perfect way. He didn't need a band.
On the other hand, i'm one of those people that don't want to volintarily rip my heart out with music, but like you said, sometimes its good for you.
There IS an element of hope to him, however i'm still finding it abit too unhappy for my liking, but there is something addictive about him. I dunno
If it was anyone else i'd say:
"What an unhappy bastard, things can't be THAT bad"
And i'd not listen to him. But like i said before, there's something about him that makes it OK. Abit like the same way i love the song soup.

I think its really the way he sings that make him seem so sad... he basically whispers which gives his songs an innocent, fragile and vulnerable tone... for example, Morrissey's tone sounds extremely sad, but his lyrics speak otherwise... well alot of the time... more anger than anything now i think about it...
btw Bums let us know what you thought of my recommendations...

My favorite music is music that I can identify with and really makes me feel something, and his music definitely does that for me. I'm exactly the same way. I love a loooot of different music and artists, and I mean LOVE. But, a favourite artist has to do something special to me, it really has to affect me, mean the world to me.

I'm so happy to see an Elliott Smith post on here. A sign that I NEED to keep coming back here! Elliott Smith is my favourite artist. The only tattoo I have is Elliott Smith related (not that I don't want more, ie. BM related. I will). He means absolutely everything to me. The first time I listened to him, I just stared, in shock and confusion, at the CD player it was coming from. It changed me.
It'll sound lame, but his music helped me when nothing else did. It got me through really down times years ago, and still does. He helped me stay alive. Even if his songs can be sad, they can make me happy. They help. Elliott Smith made incredible, honest music. I'm glad to see a few (even if new) fans of him here.
