yeah i'm a huge elliott fan. have lots of memories tied to his songs as well. i'm really looking forward to the new album
one of my fav youtube clips
One of my fav lines from an interview when asked about the name Figure 8
"I just like the idea of figure skaters trying to make this self contained perfect thing that involves a lot of effort but essentially goes nowhere. It's an endless little task that doesn't have any point but it might look good if you stop and look at it. (It's like music) There's no point. What's the point.....Is music supposed to be a tool that gets you somewhere else? No, it's just kind of worth doing on it's own. Just to do, to be creative.

i was at an auctionhouse a few weeks ago in search of a bargain acoustic guitar... so i came across this nice old one i guessed was about 25-30 years old... anyways i picked it up for $AU100, and was pretty happy getting it... anyways, since i have been looking for an electric on ebay lately, i havent put much time aside to ply my new acoustic... so i was looking around the net yesterday and was listening to a bit of Elliott Smith and was curious to what guitar he used to get such a great sound... so i did a bit of research and realised his main acoustic was a Yamaha FG-180A... and i found a picture of him playing it at the grammys... as soon as i saw it i nearly fell of my chair... that was the acoustic guitar i just bought for $100, what a freaking coincidence, and a bargain... however the one i bought is a Yamaha FG-770A... nevertheless, it is the same brand, style and sound as his one and it looks the exact same... the clip verb posted above is actually Elliott playing this exact guitar im talking about...

i have very very few living favourites
shannon hoon jeff buckley michael hutchence tim buckley bob marley jim morrison jimi hendrix marc bolan elliott smith nick drake
i dont know why they all had to die, but perhaps in dying they were denied the opportunity of more time to make any bad music, all of them really at the top of their game at their passing...

"New Moon" is a wonderful album, for those who haven't already picked it up. If I had to pick a personal favorite in terms of his albums, it'd have to be "Either/Or." That album had a huge effect on me; forced me to buy my first guitar and encouraged me to start writing. Now, if I had to pick an individual track as my favorite, it would be "No Name #1." His performance of this song at Stockholm in '98 sends goosebumps up my spine everytime I listen to it. The show is very easy to find, if interested I'm sure I can link it.

So I'm kicking myself in the ass right now for not getting into Elliott Smith sooner. He's fucking amazing. Why do the good die young? Since it's all new to me what do y'all think I should buy first? I see pegleggedgreg recommends New Moon and Either/Or. Any other recommendations for a place for a new fan to begin?

In case anyone's interested, there are a whole bunch of Elliott Smith dvd's being seeded at www.dimeadozen.org. ;D and there's a ton of audio at www.archive.org. sorry if everybody already knew about these sources, but these are great sources for people (like me) who are new to his music.

From the little bit that I've heard it seems like all of the albums would be good. Decisions Decisions...

well I recommended the two I did because thats when he got a backing band which made his sound more "colorful" anyways thats just my opinion his first two albums are pretty much just him and his guitar. Not saying they're bad but it took me listening to his later albums to really get into his earlier stuff, thats just me though.
