That is so cool Sonya... Thank you so much... I wonder if the people inside are fans... I love those pics through the trees cause you really get a sense of how you spied on them... even stalked them, nothing suss!!! lol... they are great... when i get a chance to go there, i hope i get a chance to go inside... My husband and I fantasized that maybe one day we could buy the place! I told my 7 year old that he needs to get really good grades in school so he can get a scholarship to Duke University and live in the Sleepyhouse since it's very close to campus. Although I'm sure the party vibe must still linger inside and he'd probably flunk out of his classes if he lived there!

Sonya, Thanks so much for the pics. That is my next road trip. I have been to vigil and seen the houses Shannon grew up in and the house he and _ _ _ _ (what's her name) lived in. Now I want to see The ever so famous Sleepyhouse. This will help tremendously for my journey.

Im in virginia, not too long of a drive, I would love to see the place too! It's an easy daytrip or weekend trip from VA. We drive to Baltimore, Maryland in about 5 hours and I think it's about 2.5 hours to Richmond.

Is it still a recording studio? If not, what is it?

It's a rental house where they lived when they were writing songs for the first album. They didn't record the songs there but they all lived there together and wrote music. There was a bar in the area where they played. They already had a record deal but not enough songs to record the album so they rented a house in Durham, NC where they could get away from the L.A. scene and get some music written. I believe they went to Seattle to record the album, but don't quote me on that.

So they just kinda hung out and wrote tunes together? That sounds like an awesome way to make a record. Obviously it worked.

To get away from it all and living together, must have been truly an amazing experience for the everybody involved.Wonder how different the first album would have been if it wasn`t for Sleepyhouse.

I really view the Sleepyhouse as the place that shaped who they were as a band. Prior to living there they hadn't been together as a band very long, only for a few months I think, and they only a handful of songs. From what I understand they didn't even take their girlfriends with them when they moved to North Carolina so it really must have been a bonding experience. They lived together like brothers so I think that had a huge part in why they created such magical music together. It reminds me of how the Chili Peppers rented that haunted house and all lived together to record Bloodsugarsexmagik. In my opinion, that album is their best work and I attribute a lot of it to how they were living when the album was written. The way I envision life in the Sleepyhouse is that they stayed up all night smoking out and writing/playing music and slept all day. It's in a quiet little residential neighborhood (with a church across the street) and North Carolina in general is a very laid back, southern state so I'm sure the vibe was probably mellow most of the time. I see it as sort of the bands innocence...before they hit the big time and toured extensively...before hard drugs came into the picture...I see it as a very exciting and positive time for them. Obviously a classic album materialized from their time in the Sleepyhouse which attests to it's significance in the band's history. It was important enough for them to immortalize it in a song and I think it's important that it not be forgotten. That's why I wanted to seek it out. I really couldn't justify not trying to seek it out now that I live so close! I'm so glad I did because I feel like I have a new appreciation for the music and I can look at it from a different point of view now.

haha that just gave me an idea... when i get over there and see Sleepyhouse, im going to go doorknocking around the area and see if any residents lived there when Blind Melon was there, and ask if they were ever woken up by their late night/early morning jams...lol
