I know he was brought up baptist. He definitely believed in god and life after death. He may not have considered himself religious, but more of a spiritual person. A very gifted spiritual person. He may have let some of his spiritual struggles show in his music, but everyone has their own personal wars going on at times it doesn't mean in any way he ever gave up on his belief in god or that there was something more to come in the next life. I believe he was a very courageous writer. You are so right about being a courageous writer. He was not afraid of expressing his beliefs and opinions. The band as a whole had an honesty about them, it wasn't about rock posturing. They were such a refreshing change when they hit the scene, I was sick to death of hair bands with their power ballads and Blind Melon was the opposite to that and actually had something to say. I will always love them, they brought comfort to me at a really bad time in my life and some of their lyrics brought me a sense of peace.

If Shannon was brought up Baptist, I can see where his rebellion toward organized religion could have come from. For a few years I lived in a Baptist Seminary town and 50 feet from my house was the housing for the students who had families. (I am not Baptist) My son went to the same bus stop as the kids who lived in the seminary housing and we learned a lot about the beliefs of Baptists. I consider myself to be very liberal in my beliefs, and my kids are raised to be liberal as well. My son came home from school on many occasions telling me that the kids were telling him he was going to hell. We were told we were going to hell because we put up Halloween decorations on our house and I was told I was going to hell because I have been divorced. Then after all of this judgement that these people placed on us, they try to convert us to their warped view on the Bible. This sort of intolerance for anything that strays from their rigid views on religion really makes them seem to be hypocrites. If Shannon was raised Baptist and did not "fit the mold" I can totally relate to why he would have had a problem with organized religion. I personally experience the negativity on hundreds of occasions because I didn't agree with what they were preaching. Shannon was obviously a free thinker, and certain religions frown upon free thinking because it only exposes them for their own corruption and hypocrisy. I was also raised in a very small town in the midwest, and people there can be extremely closed minded, especially towards people like Shannon.

I was listening to the Wetlands show yesterday and Shannon is talkng about religion right before they play Holyman and I remembered this thread. I didn't notice anyone posting this.
It's sometimes hard for me to hear exactly what he says cause I'm not a native english speaker so it's harder to make the right link between the words...I'm not sure about the begining and the last words...
Shannon says something like this:
Beautiful.

So thank you for remembered about this, What Shannon said it's true, beautiful words.

Yeah that is exactly what I was thinking too. That is why I stated he was more spiritual than religious.I think what he was trying to get across was that it is not a matter of religion, but a matter of faith .
