I've been wondering about Shannon's religious views....it's apparent in songs such as The Pusher and Holyman that he dislikes organized religion and such. He has contradicted this at times though depending on how you look at it. Does anyone have any quotes of Shannon stating his religious philosophy? I know he beleived in God and disliked organized religion but other than that ??. I'd love to hear some input thanks. -CHRIS-

I would love to know more about this, being someone of a religious disposition myself, also sharing the dislike for organised religion.
How does he contradict himself?

I dont know if he wanted to show his religious beliefs through The Pusher, as it is a Nina Simone/Steppenwolf cover... Shannon didnt write it...

To me it's more of a parady than a cover...and a great one at that. In the Steepenwolf version the pusher refers to a drug dealer, Shannon changes it around to go against "the bible pushing" man or preacher. Since he changed the lyrics I'm sure these were his views.

In interviews I could have sworn I heard him talking about attending church or something....depending on your view this could be considered a contradiction. But anyway I'd just like to know more about it anyone know anything?

On the intimate and interactive dvd i think he says something like "death is a lonely thing without god" or something.

"And on the day we all die, thank god our souls will be released."
Personally, I'm a non-believer.

Well, the poem on Shannon's arm from his Great-Grandmother's ledger had some religious overtones to it.
"And ever more my eyes beholds me And all my ways to Him are known And His loving arms enfolds me He will leave me not alone"
I don't think he would get this tatooed on his arm unless he had some sort of relationship with and acknowledgement of God. But I must say that coming to an understanding of God and spirituality is not one-in-the-same as being involved with 'organized religion'. I have some of the same conflicts. Some might call it contradicting, but I just don't see those two as the same thing. Maybe there's some overlap, but I place the search for spirituality far above the dogma of organized religion.

You are so articulate bobafett. What a great way to put a complicated topic so simple, respectful and sound into words. I have to agree with you on this for sure. It is personal and unique for each of us... no matter what degree a person has decided to be open to...or not

But anyway I'd just like to know more about it anyone know anything? Wether he did or not, going to to church doesn't make you religious, or agree with organised religion. 'It is the mark of a clever mind to consider an idea without accepting it'. It seems to me he may have been observing & learning without commiting to the church. I think from the posts on this thread it can be concluded for now that he is a liberal Christian, a very liberal Christian (& a postmodernist) too liberal for churches, which happens more & more these days. It seems to me he acknowledges God, but finds Him in his own way, basically just cutting out the middle man. Anyone have anymore thoughts on this?
