I've been wonderig about Shannon's early interest in music but it's really hard to find any references and the things that I have found don't really say much. I noticed in the Behind the Music video tthere's a pic of Shannon holding a guitar at a young age...does anyone know when he started to play? It also mentions that Change was the first song he ever wrote does anyone know how old he was when he wrote it? Also does anyone know if he was entirely self taught in singing and guitar or what? Thanks in avance,,,

i'm pretty sure the influences were pink floyd, obviously led zep, the dead, velvet underground....pretty much 60's and 70's music that didn't suck. obvisouly he was a huge gnr fan and i think(not sure) that styff kytten(spelling?) his early band was just a gnr cover band. But appetite didn't come out till 87 so i guess that was a little bit of a later influence. but maybe with his sister knowing axel rose he knew alot of their stuff earlier? i'm not quite sure on the deal with all that. i don't know when he started to play but he wrote change when he was 17 after a three day coke binge. he was so out of it he couldn't get up to open the blinds that were keeping the light out....'i don't feel the sun's comin out today...' as far as singing, i could be wrong, but with a voice like that, you don't need any lessons the song info came from the tones of home site, it's a good site. nobody ever really goes to the forum any more but it's how i found out about this site. here's the link to the songs. it's really informative www.blindmelon.org/songlist/

Shannon was not really into Led Zeppelin, as he said in the "Out On The Tiles" interview,
"I never really listened to Led Zeppelin actually that much, i always thought that it turned my friends into devil worshippers."
however he did respect... In the same interview he said -
"Ive always wanted to butcher a good Zeppelin song."
The rest of the band were really into them...

sorry for the profanity. Don't be sorry bumcakes, I had the same thought. There are things about him that really puzzle and there will probably never be answers. I loved the band from the start but never really paid much attention to the private lives of the band members. In this case though I have, life works in mysterious ways sometimes. I know he was a fan of Lynyrd Skynard, the Dead, Joplin and many others great artists. I read somewhere that he just had a great voice, what a gift that is. I often hear that he could at times have a nasty temper and I wonder if it was drug fueled or part of his personality. Whoever he was on the inside he battled some serious issues and I would love to talk to his mom Nel because I have someone in my life completely losing his way and I don't know how to stop him and it's tearing my family apart . How do you accept the fact that someone beautiful, young and talented is going to self-destruct? Sorry I strayed from the topic a bit....

Yeah that is sad....I think they're influences are pretty obvious in ther music. What I'm more wondering is Shannon's early music instruction. Does anyone know anything about that?

Don't want to hijack your topic blindmelon 1091 so this will be my last post on this thread Your right bumcakes it does help a lot to be here, my family doesn't understand why I won't disown him and it's caused a permanent rift between my brother and I and I've had huge arguments with my husband and he'll never win that one. Addiction is not a vice it's a fucking illness and the drugs unfortunately fix temporarily whatever doesn't feel right in your head so you don't feel like shit. Nobody wants to end up on the street with sores all over their bodies, a mouthful of rotten teeth and risk getting AIDS or Hep C. That's it for my rant.......

It sounds like you really care about your nephew Ishbell! It is so hard to watch things go out of control... guess we all have own battles to conquer in this world. Some of us have the ones that everyone can see, some of us manage to keep them at bay just enough so we can seem normal... and these battles all wear a different hat, presenting in different circumstance. Whatever they may be~ they are all so tough... and seems so unneccsary to go through. Keep up the good vibes for him, I think you are helping more than you'll ever know. (plus... not everyone can do the 'tough love' thing) ...and getting back to the thread topic... I'd love to learn that info too. Just felt like sending a little love to Ishbell for what she's going through!

Is here even another thread that covers that topic? Substance abuse.... etc... maybe more forum memebrs would like a way to discuss things like that. And for many "rock stars", it's part of life. Anyway, I didn't want to get carried away either with that, sorry! Just wondering before it turned into a whole new topic, and we'll never get to know how Shannon became who he was...(professionally , of course).

People can post their stories and get emotionaly support from the many great people here. Awesome idea.

On the River Phoenix forum, I got entangled in a brutal argument about substance abuse revolving around River's death on October 31, '93, and it turned into a huge blame game, with a number of idiots blaming John Frusciante for River's death, just because he supposedly supplied the drugs... The argument got quite ugly and personal...
Back to the topic though, has anyone thought of writing a biography or something on Shannon, to find out more about who he was as a person... The Behind The Music special was a start, but we dont get an idea about how he was as a child, what he did a school, how he got in trouble as a teenager, etc... Not to just mourn his death and speak of his use of drugs... Shannon lived a short, but interesting life, and lived life to the max, as i imagine, and I would like to know more about the man, a father, a son, and loving boyfriend about what he was as a person from the ones he loved, before it is too late... If i lived over in the US and had the connectinos and permission, i would want to do it hands down...

If anyone wrote a Shannon biography I would buy it in a heartbeat and I'm sure that thru interview they'd be able to do it.
