I've just downloaded the new album (and of course I'll buy it too, I just couldn't wait!!!).
Having listened to it a few times, I love some songs, tolerate some and can't stand a couple. Never had that with Blind Melon Version 1. I'm just not sure about the new sound, singer, songs etc.
So..I decided I needed some guidance and looked up some old posts on this forum and it looks like most people went through what I'm going through and eventually grew to love Travis, the new songs and accept this new album in the same way as the old stuff.
Am I right or am I losing my Melonness?!!

Went through the exact same thing. You'll get over it.

I dunno, the very first time I heard "Wishing Well" it grew on me right away and the more I listen to Travis Warren's lyrics the more excited I am about the new CD(this guy is the real deal, give him a chance)!! ;D

There were definitely some songs that I liked more than others on the first listen. Some of the songs are best experienced live, so if you get a chance to see Blind Melon live you'll see for yourself. The songwriting style is definitely different because Shannon and Travis are two totally different songwriters. My advice would be to check out some of Travis' solo stuff so you can get used to his songwriting style. Then you will probably have an easier time getting used to the sound of the new Blind Melon. ;D

I like to think of Shannon w/BM as chocolate and Travis w/BM as peanut butter. I love them both for totally seperate reasons, diferent tastes, different textures, but in the end, they're just 2 great tastes that taste great together! Oh my God, did I just date myself? #bigblush#
(in case I AM older than everyone else it was a really old Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercial)

I am going through it too, in fact I just started to like Cheat em Street, that song took a long time to grow on me. I adore Travis though, I really do. He is fantastic! At first I was so leary.....I think seeing the band live really puts it into perspective.

I experienced the same thing.
When they first released Harmful Belly, Make a Difference and For My Friends I liked them... but it was sooooooo weird listening to it! When they started putting other songs on their Myspace I didnt even check them out a lot of times... While I was absolutely happy for them and super excited for the tour and whatnot, it just didn't feel like melon at first. Then I started making plans to see them in Pittsburgh and to pump myself up (ha, like I needed anything to get me pumped) I decided to give the "demo album" another chance and man, did I feel it at that point! It was like discovering a new band altogether, except now it truly felt like Melon to me. Now I love every song on that album, some more than others, but still...
I think you just need more time to get used to the idea and I agree that once you see them live you will be blown away.

What helped me transition was watching some interviews with Travis and seeing a little more of where he's coming from, and the guy is a huuuuge Blind Melon fan first & foremost and a talented artist to boot who brings his own unique style to the group, but at the same time dosen't really change or disrrupt the sound they already had(he just adds a different spice to the Blind Melon flavor, and it still tastes good).

Phew! Thanks people. I feel like I'm on the start of a long road back to recovery now. Off to listen to the album again!! Now all I have to do is to get them over to the UK!

I'm experiencing the same thing except I don't really know any of the new songs yet. I've given them a quick try and am not a fan yet.
I don't know if it's because of my dedication to Shannon and his songwriting or what, but I'm having a hard time accepting a new singer taking his place.
I want to love the new Blind Melon though so I am planning on making the Detroit show to give them a shot.

Amen!
The songs are different than the old Blind Melon. However, keep in mind Soup was a very different set of songs than Blind Melon. I think it takes a while to accept the new songs. Personally, I was expecting to hear old Blind Melon when I first started listening to them. I was surprised, but not disappointed. Not only does the band have a new singer, but they also have 12 years of musical evolution. Can anyone say that they are the same that they were 12 years ago? I love the new music as much as I love the old music.

That's true. After 12 years we can't expect it to sound the same. But I do think it's crazy that Blind Melon from 12 years ago is still relevant music today.
Some music just sounds dated and I think Blind Melon will always stand the test of time.

The only song that I haven't liked and still hasn't grown on me is So High. I don't know, it's too poppy sounding for me.
I hear Elliot Smith influence somewhere, but. I'm not a fan of the song.
