There were songs I loved at first (Wishing Well, Right Set of Eyes, For My Friends, Cheatem Street) but others (Last Laugh, Sometimes, Tumblin' Down) took time. I still don't love them all, but I accepted that the Self-titled album came from a situation that couldn't be recreated. Soup came from a darker place than Travis has probably ever been. And the way things change over time... Chinese Democracy won't be Appetite For Destruction, Zeitgeist wasn't Simese Dream, Year Zero wasn't The Downward Spiral.
I think the most important events were the little video for Harmful Belly, and then hearing one of the show's from a live boot. The way he goes through the old songs, and the new songs, they feel like they belong together more than the studio versions did. So I began to think of new BM and old BM as one band, which helped a lot.

How weird is this? I listened to the album twice before doing my original post. I listened to it again this mornign and every song seemed to hit home. Suddenly everything connected and I can see what people are talking about.
I love Blind Melon part 1, always will. This sounds like a new band but with the same amazing Melon feel. Weird. I didn't expect to start liking it, maybe my brain needed a kickstart.
The only way I can desribe this whole process is losing your mum and then your dad getting a new wife ten years later. It's so hard to accept at first...

See, for me, So High is my favorite song followed by Hypnotized, and then Cheetum Street. I love the whole album but I was scared to death I wouldn't like it at all. But I love it! BM with Shannon Hoon is a piece of all of our histories from the band themselves to those of us affected to the bone by their music. BM as they are now are incredible in a different way because these guys are 12 years older than they were. They aren't going to write the same A) because they aren't young and naive anymore and B) because Shannon is not writing with them anymore...Travis is now in the mix. Anyone who gives them a fair shake is going to find something to love on this record. just my 2 cents...

Again "Wishing well" immediately caught on with me and was bouncing around in my head for a few days(very catchy); and let's not forget that the band still consists of 4 of the most talented musicians I have ever heard, and with Travis we are just beginning a new Melon era and it's going to be good stuff!! ;D

The first time I heard the new songs w/ Travis, I loved what I heard. I thought he was VERY faithful to Shannon's memory and sound yet proved to be a great songwriter in his own. As for the new songs, there's maybe two that I thing are weak links and don't do much for me (not mentioning names) but the songs that I love off the the album are so good that they more than make up for the two particular songs that I do not like. I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing them (and my fellow boardmembers) in Charlotte on the 7th! WOOOO HOOOOO!

I've just done a run through and my thoughts the first time around are that the new BM is just kind of generic.
Not only is Travis NOT Shannon Hoon, but the music on the old BM was so much better. You could be listening to what sounded like a peaceful, slow song and then it would quickly turn into a groovy jam and then into something a little more hard rock. I am having a hard time differentiating the sounds from one song to the next because I think they all sound very similar. This is just my two cents after listening once and I'm not trying to piss anyone off.
I will continue to listen because I truly want to love BM again and I will go to the Detroit show as well. Hopefully by then I will fall in love all over again!

I think the old sound was different from the new sound no doubt, but I am diggin both and are excited about the new era of Blind Melon & hope they sell a million copies. But as far as some of the older songs that started off mellow or jazzy and then BUSTED OUT into a wild hard rock beat or tempo, I am not a fan of that at all and are glad to see the band getting away from that unorganized sound of music.

I'm happy the songs have grown on you, smjy2k. They definitely did with me. I listened to the demo album quite a bit, and that's how I grew to really love them. But yes, they are completely different to Blind Melon with Shannon, and Travis, as he has said, shouldn't be viewed as a substitute for Shannon. And they hope they come to the UK pretty soon too, haha!

Luckily for me, I found the forum last January and only had a couple weeks until the first 3 songs filtered out. I was NUTZ for the new tunes, that ended what questions I mighta had. It all comes down to the music As far as the old albums sounding or not sounding like the new. MEH Blind Melon, Soup, Nico all sound different one from the other, so it's not a surpise this one is different again. It's been 12 years, and I'm glad to see the guys are still go'n strong, not standing in one spot musically. It's refreshing#rock#

Many bands use this technique, mostly jam bands. Phish used it alot, live. They phrased it as "tension, and release" . I thought that was a great description. Building you up & up & up, then letting you go. I think what's great about this band is, there is something common in them that brings all these fans together....yet we can all seem them under different light as well ;D

Okay, I've had a few days to calm down, and I know this forum is a happy vibey place to be, but....."glad to see the band getting away from that unorganized sound of music" ? That IS Blind Melon!!! I have visions of a fan sitting through all 3 albums and going to see them thinking "one, day maybe one day, they'll become more organized!" How weird...

A good example of what I meant is the songs "Tones of Home" and "Soul One", they are two different types of songs but both keep their same pace and tempo and finish how they started.
