I've been wondering about the way Soul One was recorded. It is, to the best of my knowledge, their earliest recording to be released officially. Brad said "We recorded that in our practice hall in L.A. when we were rehearsing to put together songs for the first album. It was on an analog eight-track tape. We painstakingly made it sound good against all odds" about it ( source). Now, my question is if anyone knows what he means by eight-track tape. Is this an eight-track cartridge (surely not?), open reel tape (why would it be so tough to make that sound good?), compact cassette (like on Tascam's Portastudios), or something else entirely?
