If there are any Mancow Muller fans out there.......he was quite the dick about us losing Shannon as well..Cold and disrespectful..... I lost alot of respect for him..... I don't believe the guys were aware of his ignorance in 2007 when they did his radio show acoustically......
"Shock Jock" jag offs......

I remember hearing them on Mancow (the link was posted here) in 2007 and it was evident that he was being disrespectful to them. When they first came in he was like "what happened to that other guy" (talking about Shannon) and he acted like he knew nothing about it. I think he's also an asshole but like others have said that's his whole character. I think Howard Stern is funny on some levels for being so outrageous, so I can't necessarily dismiss him entirely because I don't like one thing he said. I've listened to his show now for like 5-6 years and I feel like I've had this moment before. I do get to a point where I believe he's being ridiculous and completely ignorant to a situation, but then I realize: this is what others may think of the things he says that I think are funny. So for every time he makes fun of somebody / something I don't like and I think it's funny there might be someone out there saying "what an insensitive asshole". That is what he does and I half-expected what he said about Shannon to be condescending / hateful, I just didn't know he'd harp on it so much. In the end I think Howard is still somebody I respect as a funny / outrageous guy and just because he doesn't understand the importance / impact of my favorite singer doesn't mean that I have to completely hate him. He's made fun of iconic figures death (Michael Jackson, Jerry Garcia, Kurt Cobain, etc). That seems to be his "sketch" for every time someone famous / important dies that he "doesn't care" and has that hateful attitude about it. That's just my 2 cents after thinking about this some more. I also agree that Nel and Nico would be very hurt by this. But then you have to sit back and think as either one of those people: this guy (Howard Stern) does not know the situation at all, so any comments he has on it are really completely unfounded. Just take it from who it is for what it is: social commentary from a very outspoken person. Not to mention I think Howard has been out of touch with popular music since the late 80's. He always sarcastically made fun of bands / artists that he would even have on his show. He just likes to act like he's "above it all" when you know he's not. It's not that big of a deal to me. I still will listen to Howard and still will love Blind Melon.

I am referring to 1995 specifically when he was rude about Shannons passing, as well as being rude in 2007........I was truly hurt w/ the comments he spewed, despite the fact I was sad for losing Shannon at the time.. Dick.. Sorry I went off topic about Stern....

Well I have no idea what he said in '95 but I know in '07 he was disrespectful to the band to their face in that interview he did with them. I'm not speaking on anything to do with Mancow because I don't listen to him regularly and I've only heard him that one time when he interviewed BM in 2007. I was just putting a general statement that most "shock jocks" have that same attitude about everything that they're "above it all". That's how Howard is, so that's probably how Mancow is. I personally don't think Mancow is either an interesting radio host or a person I would care about what he says.

Keep people listening at any cost....."entertainment" is the key word. At that time, I was a Mancow fan... (95") mind you....and I have heard him be rude to everyone who dies, or has problems in life, I just never thought anyone could speak that way about Shannon. Our current Melons should have walked out of that interview....Although, he is syndicated, and still super popular in 50 markets or something ridiculous....Great press I guess..... He broadcasts out of Chicago where I am from.....but he's such a dick, he isn't even heard in Chicago.....No one wants his pompous ass..

After listening to this audio clip of the Howard Stern show, I think that it doesn't mean too much in the scheme of things.
When reading the tabloid headlines from the ragazines in the grocery store check-out aisle, I sometimes wonder, how do these publications not get sued for all of the crap they print? But then I remember that it is quite rare for an individual to win a case against a tabloid for printing something that is untrue. The reason for this (usually) is that most people don't put any stock into what tabloids print, and therefore most courts rule in favor of the tabloid, just because most people don't believe the crap that is printed in the headline of a tabloid.
I'm not saying that Stern's comments about Shannon are true or false. I just think its one of those situations (like some people have already stated) - consider the source. He's just trying to get a rise out of people. And if this gets our panties in a bunch, then he will be satisfied that his job has been done well. Don't give him (or anyone) that satisfaction that they don't deserve.
In conclusion, I will just say that I respect the person that Shannon Hoon was (infinitely more than who Howard Stern is or could ever be).

I definitely agree with you Ryan. I can't even tell you how much I have come to respect who Shannon was and what he did in the form of music for the world. I'm just amazed sometimes reading quotes from him, reading his bio, etc. and not understanding how such an amazing person is so under-appreciated in the world today. I wish more people did know how great the music and the man that Shannon was, but then again I'm just glad I know about it. It was a gift to learn about Blind Melon and the music has definitely helped me out through some hard times.

If I remember correctly... the performance of "For My Friends" was a toughie.. Probably a little too early in the morning for TTW.
I'll dig thru some stuff and get that to you, Flesher..

Actually... This performance isnt the one I was thinking of... There was one radio performance that was hard to listen to... Anyway.. gimme a sec. Also.. I gotta find the data disc for this.. I only have the first 2 parts on this CD. I am thinking they played "No Rain" or "Skinned" during this show. Anyway... here is the link (I'll add the other files, if the were recorded, as soon as I find them): www.archive.org/details/BlindMelon-MancowRadioShow10162007

I think the one you're talking about that was hard for Travis was the one on DC101 maybe? That's one where Travis says he has a sore throat or he was up all night or something. He's pretty scratchy on the vocals in that one but it's still OK to hear.

Now Mr. Stern isn't exactly my brand of humour (not really into strippers queefing & the like), but I think that he is a very intelligent man who every once in awhile says something extremely insightful. I don't mind someone making fun of the music or the fans like that, but it's the fact that it was right after he died that makes it so very, very wrong. I'm sure that I myself have made fun of different music many, many times in the past that somebody out there somewhere might hold dearly and be insulted about, but not immediately following the musician's death! That's not cool. I've always hated Mancow.

Also, not that this excuses anything by any stretch of the imagination, but Stern has changed his tactics after Artie Lange died. Seems to happen to most people after they lose someone who is important to them and they can see it from the inside. He's not quite so harsh about people who OD. Most of the time instead now he gives almost like a PSA telling people to get help. Sad that it took someone else to die for him to get it.

If I would have heard this when it happened I might have been pissed off, but the fact that he didn't even know Shannon's name means it was nothing personal...just Stern being Stern. I heard a lot of compliments and I am just glad I got to hear snippets of "Sleepyhouse" and "Deserted" were actually being played on the radio.
