So I don't quite remember when or where, but I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that there is an acoustic cover of Pink Floyd's song Mother done by Shannon. I also read something about an acoustic Vernie? Does anyone even know what I'm talking about? Are these floating around somewhere out there? Or am I insane? Probably the latter.

I Havent Personally Heard Shannon Cover Pink Floyd's Mother, But Blind Melon Did do a Song Called Mother on an Early Demo. Dont Think it was a Cover, Though. Seems Like I may Have read somewhere years ago that Shannon Did Make his Mother a Tape of Him Singing "Mother" By Pink Floyd...Maybe for Mothers Day One year or Something. Havent heard it circulating at all though. Also Havent heard an Acoustic Version of Vernie, But there may be one out there. Would Love to Hear That Myself, If it is out there?

There is definitely the Blind Melon song called 'Mother'. And there is a spot in this article where the author is talking with Nel at her home in Lafayette. www.blindmelonarticles.com/pdf/Details_July_1996_02.pdfAnd it is mentioned that she has a tape of Shannon singing a cover of Pink Floyd's 'Mother'. It could be that Shannon really sings a version of Pink Floyd's 'Mother' on that tape, or its possible that the author could've got confused, heard Shannon singing a song called 'Mother' and thought it was the Pink Floyd version. But I have never seen a "circulated" audio recording of Shannon singing the Pink Floyd version.

A cover of PF's "Mother" does exist along with a lot of things that never made it to the trading community. I was once in touch with a guy in FL that had this and many other rare items. He played some of "Mother" over the phone for me. He also had home video from a party Shannon was at with him paying guitar and singing. He also had the Shannon acoustic disc that finally made it to our ears thanks to Nel. Point is, there is so much more out there that most of us would die to hear but either people are sitting on it because they promised not to let it out or the band doesn't feel it is "releasable" quality. If the documentary (what happened to the Sundance 2011 premiere?) time-line is any indication of new melon surfacing we may see it when we are elderly melons if ever at all.

If it is Shannon Hoon Or Blind Melon, Then as far as i am concerned it is "releasable Material". Ofcourse, They arent gonna want to Do an official Release of this stuff, Probably due to Poor Audio Quality, Etc...But, If anyone Has a stack of old cassettes Laying around where shannon recorded Himself Playing and singing...I will Definately take a Listen at it. I guess Not all melons want to Share the treasures they have hidden away...It saddens Me Though. I am sure Shannon Would Have wanted this stuff to be heard By "His people" under these Circumstances.

I asked Nel about this at the 99 vigil and from my memories of the conversation is that Shannon recorded Pink Floyds Mother as a personal gift to her and It is something that she would want to keep for herself from her Son......Im sure there are other gems of the sort that will never make to light of day and for good reason.......
Yes there are other recordings out there in peoples possessions that will never get shared.....some of which at the request of the band or Shannon hisself......

Rachel, You Bring a Good Point to the Table...I appreciate Your View on this subject. Maybe There are some things out there That Shannon, or the Other memebrs would Not want Shared for whatever Reason. I personally wouldnt want to have anything the Band Didnt or Wouldnt approve of Me Having. I especially wouldnt want anyone to Leak a Copy of The Tape Shannon Made for Nel. How the hell Some Guy in Florida would get his Hands on this to start with is Beyond Me...Without a Doubt, There are some things out there that Really just dont need to Be shared, and I appreciate you Bringing that to My attention. I Never really took the time to Look at it from That Angle... But, If there are people out there that Have Hidden Treasure That Doesnt fall under These (or Very Similar) Circumstances...Please Feel free to Share those with The rest of us! I feel there are Probably still some things out there that just havent been shared, That Shannon would Want His People To have!

I call bullshit. I don't care what anyone thinks... For many of us, Shannon is our favorite vocalist/lyricist. The limited catologue currently available isn't enough for anyone, regardless of what they say. Now, I understand some things are allowed to be kept close for sentimental reasons... but at some point, it becomes about Shannon and keeping him alive because he left far too soon. The way to do that is spreading all and everything he has... the fans who only know a couple songs aren't going to be the people twenty years from now still listening to hte music and spreading the legacy. It's us... the people who care... his greatest fans. Once time passes, so do people. The more material available the better... the more enriched his legacy becomes... the more depth it acquires... fuck privacy... fifty years from now... it will be incredibly regrettable if anything still hasn't been released no matter the quality. You are talking about a cautionary tale. We will never get any more than what has already appeared or what is being stashed away for whatever reason. What is the purpose of allowing recordings, music that people would die for and cherish forever, to just fade away with time. It saddens me seeing this discussion. It makes me believe there is a lot of other material available for release that has been neglected. As time passes, one thing that always fills it is regret. I hope whoever has any so called unreleased material doesn't regret not releasing it before it's too late... because sooner or later, this material will die adn what we have is what we have... and it's unfair for people to assume or calculate whatever worth Shannon had on us individually. I'm sure he meant a lot to a lot of individuals, especially his lyrical content

So...Nel not releasing songs her son did personally for her is bullshit? I understand you want everything he has ever done, we all do, but there are valid reasons for some things not being in circulation. No matter what we think, we are still just fans. Most of us never got the chance to know Shannon, let alone be on a personal level with him. His mother has every right to want to hold on to something. Some of the other material that may or may not be out there is for the band to decide. There may be good reason some things haven't been released. Maybe they are putting it out with the documentary, maybe they are going to work on another Shannon release. Truth is we just don't know, but it isn't for us to decide. Shannon may have specifically told people not to share, that it was just for them. I don't believe Blind Melon or Shannon's music is going to fade any time soon. The way to keep it alive isn't to be upset at things you don't have, but to share the things you do. Play it for the little ones, play it for your friends, spread the word. Not trying to criticize, just trying to let you know where some who were close to Shannon may be coming from and give you a different perspective.
