Does anyone else believe his trials of depression was a product of his excessive drug use. From what I've read, he was a delight to be around when sober... Happy as can be, but during periods of heavy drug use, he became lethargic and depressed. He was never clinically depressed with depression or bipolar disorder. What gives?

It's like having any disease, if you never see a doctor you won't know you have a specific thing wrong, you'll just know you don't feel 100%. From what I've read about Shannon, it seems pretty clear that he had severe depression. Drugs make you feel better at first, but then eventually they just make you feel more depressed, so you use more. And with depression depending on the severity, you can be fine around your friends a lot of the time, then go into your room and just feel like crap. Or you can put on a brave face around other people. Shannon is the only one that knows what was going on in his head on a day to day basis.

He seemed a little insecure about himself IMO. We're all a little insecure sometimes.

He was insecure about himself and how people perceived his lyrics and vocals. There have been interviews with other band members where they discuss how taxing it was for him to take all the critical hits on Soup... so to a degree he was a pretty insecure person about his performance and talent, which certainly exacerbated things but I think the core issues were present before he even was in Blind Melon.

It's hard to imagine that someone with such talent would have insecure feelings...however I do think his insecurities were enhanced by his addiction. Prior to BM, I get the feeling that he was a very confident person. JMO tho.

Didn't they say he was trying to impress his parents and using his hyperactivity by being really good at sports and stuff?

I think his parents are the ones who influenced him to play sports in order to combat his hyperactivity. Turns out he was REALLY good at it!
