...as brilliant. Such a plain, simple, clear thought that so many people have trouble figuring out. It warmed my heart and made me feel that much better about being such a huge Blind Melon fan. That he wasn't one of those assholes behind closed doors that talked shit about people who were different from him. My respect for Shannon grew a lot after reading this, and I didn't think I could respect him anymore then I already did. What a great human being that was, whatever flaws he had were totally outweighed by his messages to the world...
"Coming from a small town, a lot of people can't deal with people who are different. And when you're brought up around a society that doesn't accept people for what they are, regardless of whether they're black or gay or whatever... if you're brought up in a society like that, it's hard not to become that way. When I moved out to Los Angeles, I was so happy I could become friends with all walks of people and push away all those stereotypes I was subjected to growing up. The only people that can't deal with it are small-minded people who are really unhappy with themselves, so they take it out on other people who are happy about the way there are." - Shannon Hoon
I finally got the Greg Prato book and that's what that came out of. In that chapter with "shannon & Axl" I think is where that was but it struck me so hard and made me feel so good, and so understood. I can relate with every bit of that. I'm about 80-90 pages in, really enjoying the book thus far....

I've always loved that quote. Shannon seemed like such a sweet person.
