Okay...
so im one of THOSE people who got the Greg Prato's book late, and am presently plowing through it... I actually got it from a fellow Aussie melonhead i met through ebay which was kinda neat... so last night im reading the Woodstock chapter and get to the part where Rogers says that after the band left Woodstock, Shannon stayed behind, talked his way up to the side of the stage and filmed the Chili Peppers show with the camera he always had with him...
i used to be a hardcore RHCP fan back in the day, but since that last album i havent listened to them AT ALL... however i remembered the first bootleg i ever got, shortly before the Blind Melon ones, was a dvd of RHCP Woodstock '94, (around 2004)... so i decide to go look for it with the slight hope of maybe seeing a glimpse of Shannon... i had been packed away in the roof long ago, but i found it almost immediately...
chuck it in my computer and take a gander.... the footage was a vhs transfer, but still pretty good, the shots were cut very tightly, making it hard to see who was there... there were like 100 people on each side of the stage plus it was night so it made it very difficult to spot... so im there for an hour and frustrated i cannot point out Shannon... the majority of the camera angles are faced so u can see a the crowd on Flea's side, but only at a distance... so an hour in after Higher Ground i decide to call it quits... i reach down to the hard drive to eject when Flea starts talking to the crowd about how he used to pee his pants up until he was 15 or something, and i found this amusing so i wanted to see how this story panned out...
i look up at the screen and almost immediately the camera is put on a fairly close mid-shot directly to the side of Flea so you can see some of the crowd on Navarro's side (one of the few shots showing this side), but only a few people at the front of the side of the stage, as he tells his tale... and who should be smack bang in the middle of the screen, but Mr Shannon Hoon... it is very clear it is him...
he has changed out of his dress but his hair is still done up with the blue bow, and he has his camera over his shoulder, but is not shooting... he is chatting with a guy to his left in a red/orange shirt... what is amazing about the shot is it is by far the longest shot in the telecast, it goes for 35secs (i timed) which is ridiculously long to hold one shot on live tv... so Shannon is chatting to this bloke, periodically adjusting the strap on his shoulder attached to his camera (which must be bloody heavy as it keeps sliding off his shoulder), and midway though this shot, Shannon gives this guy one of his huge, over-the-top handshakes ive seen him do on numerous other BM footage... this as just before the band played Under The Bridge.... Here is a still (the footage is much clearer in making out Shannon)...
Ironically, i recently was aware that this Chili's show was released on dvd outside the US, and i had seen it in my local store... so today i went out and got it hoping for a clearer picture, but it was WORSE... plus it cut out this particular banter... so many random coincidences worked in my favour, and im still gobsmacked i found him there on the footage... and to think i was about to stop the dvd, if it hadnt been for Flea peeing his pants until he was 15... haha plus it recindled a bit of the love i had for the CHili's listening to that music again... it made my day...
