In my opinion a SBD recording lacks so much of the warmth and love that is a Blind Melon show. You can't hear the crowd singing it's guts out on Change or Pusher. You lose so much of the live show feeling. Also, soundboards aren't always mixed the best for listening at home. I think that best way to go is a matrix of the two sources that is optimally mixed to get the "fullness" of an AUD recording and the "cleaniness" of a SBD recording. Either way, the band would still need servers as a means to distribute the recordings. I'm also not sure about the legality of a SBD recording. I think that the venue owners have ownership over SBD recordings and if the band were to use these recordings for profit, they may have to pay the venue. (I don't know about this......does anybody else?) If the band signs a release, then the venue can do whatever they want with the recordings. For example, Chris Shinn played in Hollywood, at a venue called "The Gig". He signed a release so the venue could video tape the show. After the show, the venue was selling DVDs for $100 a piece. I asked Chris about this and he was stunned, but also said he never read the release. The venue wouldn't even give a copy of the DVD to Chris. I called the venue and asked if the band could have a copy, and that I helped promote them... they said: "Maybe you and the band could split the cost".... Very lame... But, there is not much they can do once that initial release is signed.

I'm all for that. I'll sing verses of "Tones of Home" during "So High" .... I promise it will sound good and not ruin your recording... #haha# I'll also bump into your stands numerous times and yell out "FREEBIRD".... Just to make sure the taping goes well...

was that you at the melvins show last night matt? you just described my experience there, and every other show i have ever taped. i also called the gig last year, and said the same thing you did. they gave me the exact response about me and chris putting our money together to get a copy. they were cool about me taping his shows there with my own camera though. i sent you those right? let me know if you get covers made for andy of that stuff. thanks. casey.

If the band signs a release, then the venue can do whatever they want with the recordings. I think even if the band doesn't sign a release, the SBD recording still belongs to the venue, even if they can't do anything with it. That's lame about trying to get a copy of a show for the band. Some venue owners can be such assholes.

I think we need to just find a way to have a "Taping Section" at every BM show and then we wouldn't have to worry about it. Besides, it usually always smells so good around the tapers area . I do not think that the venues have any ownership over the SBD recording as long as the band doesn't sign anything giving those rights to the venue. There were 21 live Grateful Dead shows called "Dick's Picks" that were made available for sale to the public and I would be willing to bet that the venues the shows were recorded in have not seen a dime of profits from the sale of the CD's.
