Have you guys seen the preview for this movie? It takes place in Brazil and it's along the lines of the movie "Hostel". Everyone in Brazil is soooo pissed cause it's only going to make our image (which is already not great) even worse.
It comes out this Friday and Im gonna go watch just to have an opinion on it.. I mean it's just a movie, but people here really do have a horrible image of my country. Ive had people ask me if we used silverware to eat there, if Brazil was in Europe, and I can't tell you how many men asked me about all the topless girls on the beaches.. Im like, hello? Ive lived there for 15 yrs and NOT ONCE have I seen girls topless on the beach (only in Rio's carnaval, but even then they're like all painted so it doesnt really count). Also, people have this image of Brazilian women being very open sexually, but it's actually not quite true. For example, the average age for girls to lose their virginity there is 18 and boys 17 according to a recent survey.. Here in America it's probably what, 13, 14?
People also think Brazil is either a big jungle (once again, Ive lieved there for 15 yrs and NEVER went to the jungle and only seen monkeys at the zoo!) or a big favela (slum) which is not the case either. Yes, we're a third world country so we obviously have very poor people and very rough areas in the city as well as high crime rates, but it's not all over the country, you know?
I think the only stereotype that actually applies is that we're all about soccer... Other than that it's all propaganda!
Just thought I'd share that with you guys before some of you went and watched the movie and came out all paranoid thinking Brazil is the worst place on the planet
PS: I thought about putting this in the movie section, but it's more of a general discussion about Brazil and not exactly a movie thread
