The association between Guns N Roses and Blind Melon is well-known throughout the melon community. Shannon Hoon and Axl Rose are both originally from Lafayette, Indiana.
Axl and Shannon did not attend the same high school, and they were not in the same grade. Axl was a few years older than Shannon. Axl attended Jefferson High School and Shannon attended McCutcheon High School.
Guns and Roses had already hit their success by the time Shannon had moved to Los Angeles. Axl invited him to the studio (during the Use Your Illusion recording sessions), and they were all very impressed by Shannon's singing. He sang on these songs:

Shannon also appears in the video for "Don't Cry":
This is video footage of Shannon singing "You Ain't the First" with Guns n Roses at the Ritz in New York City (1991).
