I don't know why B-Mel is only remembered for their one-and-only hit, "No Rain."
They were a good band and seemed to have alot goin' for them. I guess when Hoon died things just fell apart.

All Melon fans feel the same way. I love every single one of their songs. But, we do live in a mainstream world.

No Rain is what they're remembered for but they technically had other more minor "hits". Tones of Home, Galaxie, and Change all made it onto the mainstream rock charts.

I think Blind Melon is the only Band that I can listen to a CD and on EVERY SONG I'm like....OHHHH that one is my FAVORITE!!! I seriously think every song is a masterpeice and I don't even say that about Tori. I guess No Rain was the only "catchy" radio friendly song....I don't think it defines Melon at all. I think if everyone just listened to a few more songs they would see what a great band Melon was.

In my mind there`s at least 20-30 Blind Melon songs that are better than No Rain but i can see why that is the one that got played most on the radio..
I think one of the main reasons is that the guitar intro is very catchy and it`s easy to remember. No Rain is a great tune..
I heard it on the tv show O.C(please don`t ask me why i was watching that!)about 2 months ago..Nice to hear Blind Melon on such a popular tv show.Maybe and just maybe a few people liked it and wanted to hear more so who knows,we might have a few more BM fans after that.. Not a long shot,huh?...lol

I get angry when people think of Blind Melon as a one hit wonder band...they really missed the boat if they think that. I think if more people had the opportunity to see them live they would not be remembered as a "one hit wonder"...they were over before they really even started in my opinion...they didn't have the time to release more "hits". Anyone who knows good music can listen to their albums and know that there is so much more to their music than one hit song. I think the video for No Rain was good and bad...it got them a hell of a lot of exposure and introduced them to a lot of people...but the bee girl thing was gimmick-y so a lot of people latched on to that image and that became the definition of Blind Melon to a lot of people..."the bee girl band". They were a band that should have been regarded for their musical talent...not the image someone created for a video. The video gave people the idea that they were something that they werent...listen to the lyrics to "No Rain" and they are not cutesy happy lyrics...a lot of people liked what they saw and they listened to it but they didn't really HEAR it...know what I mean? I personally like the song No Rain but I think a lot of people had the wrong idea about the band because of that video.

As I've read often and also seen on this board "No Rain" may have been their break out song but really did not define their sound. Society likes to label or pidgeonhole artists and it seems that Blind Melon wasn't that easy to label. Unfortunately it may have worked against them because people wanted another "No Rain" but instead got a much darker and complex mix in Soup. From the information I've read and what I hear in their music, their approach to creating it wasn't a formula but a very natural creative process. They also had very diverse influences which I also hear in their music. IMO had Shannon lived (maybe this is wishful thinking), they would have quite a large and loyal fan base now and would still be playing clubs which they seemed to prefer doing in any case because of the interaction with the fans and the creative freedom it would have afforded them by not having to cater to the demands of a big record label. In any case my blood pressure goes up when I hear that Blind Melon were a one hit wonder, they were one in a handful of bands that made any kind of impression on me in the 90's.

They were seen as a one hit wonder because they had one hit
Their other songs were better; defined their sound more fully, but weren't hits.
There you go, simple logic.

What I don't understand is that they had other videos featuring really good material yet No Rain still defined the band. Was it because they didn't get enough airplay or the fans they made with No Rain didn't get the other material? On the other hand I love their sound, videos or no videos so can't understand why other people didn't get past No Rain.

Probably because they aren't exactly mainstream...No Rain is the only song that is catchy for most people at first listen...the others take a while to absorb but once you do they are WAY better than No Rain.

Gotta agree with you about them not being mainstream. But damn they were good.....I was hooked after my first listen and will always love them.

Yeah same with me I was hooked at first listen...but for most people I've tried to "Melonfy" the general response seems to be that it takes awhile for them to "get" it if you know what I mean.

People are used to listening to whatever crap the radio tells them is cool. Most of the music on Blind Melon's first album wasnn't the type of music that is forcefed to people on the radio. Anyone who really loves music knows that Blind Melon is a good band and that No Rain isn't their best song. It doesn't make sense to me why a lot of the people who loved No Rain didn't love the rest of the album. It's their loss I guess.
