There is a guy named Brent Starkey from Canada that used to play in Speakermind. They played the vigil a few times. Nel has mentioned him several times to me because she said when she heard him sing Shannon's songs, she had to leave the room and went outside and bawled because he was so much like Shannon in his sound and his movements......I wish I could have seen this guy but he hasn't been back to the vigil since then. I believe this was in 2004......was anyone else there a this time and what did you think?

Yes, it is true, my kids love Blind Melon, new and old, and Shannon Hoon. My 10 yr old wore a different Shannon Hoon vigil shirt to school just about every day last year when uniforms were optional. I guarantee you that a good portion of that elementary school knows Shannon's name now, teachers and students, just by wondering, who is this guy??? Never too young or old to spread the melon love.....
And I have to mention, Cody (Lemonade), being from Lafayette, has spent countless hours next to Shannon in his final resting place, playing guitar for him or just being there. When I went to my first vigil in 2005, I walked up to Shannon's grave for the first time and Cody was right next to Shannon playing guitar with two other people. I still have the little video I took of that and he has been a permanent fixture at the vigil or any other time I have visited Lafayette during the year, we even joked about him being the welcoming committee. If you know Cody at all you cannot say that the Hoon love doesn't run through that boys veins......no matter how old or young he is..........hell, I have no idea how old he is....I think he has been 19 since I met him in 2005........at least that is what he told me......LMAO!!!

And one more thing......I have heard a handful of people mention the new album and "Travis's shitty lyrics". But does anyone know who really wrote the lyrics? I was under the impression that it was a collaborative effort. I know Harmful Belly was a Rain Fur Rent song so that may have been Travis or former band members, Christopher wrote Last Laugh (with help from Travis and Shannon) but what about the rest?
I may be wrong, I don't really know, but before taking stabs at Travis for the lyrics you should first confirm if he even wrote them.
Also, it is unfair to compare ANYONE to Shannon Hoon in that regard, because he was definitely a lyrical genius.....a true poet......it is impossible to find someone that would come close so just forget about it......it's not gonna happen. The next best thing is to find someone that recognizes, appreciates and feels the same way about Shannon that we do......and Travis was that person. Yeah, you can find someone who sounds like Shannon, or looks or writes or whatever but I would prefer someone who feels the love for Shannon over all of that. It would be really hard for me to watch someone on stage that doesn't "get it". That's what I worry about.....

I am always fascinated by the younger people I meet at the vigil, online or at the shows. I always wonder how they got into Blind Melon because it is so rare to find people that know anything other than no rain, especially the younger ones. I give them so much credit to have sifted through all the crap on the radio or what their friends are listening to these days, and they go against the norm and be melonheads!! These are some of the most dedicated fans of Shannon and Blind Melon that I have ever met.
I am 34, I was very lucky to have seen Blind Melon with Shannon Hoon at a very small venue here in Tampa before no rain even came out. It was very similar to the current tour, a small club....a 3 dollar show! The next show I saw was Woodstock 94. I was lucky, doesn't mean I am more of a fan than the next guy who didn't get the chance to see them. To me, Shannon will always be part of Blind Melon, even with a new singer.....his lyrics, music and spirit live on through them. Travis was a huge part in making that happen, we can't forget that. The band said themselves that they were not looking to reuinte......they heard Travis sing and he made them want to be a band again.
Age is not a factor here. Whether you were 15 or 50 when this reunion happened, it is something we all experienced together. We have bonded with other melonheads at shows all around the country. We have pictures and memories to prove how wonderful it all was and hopefully will be again. I think we are all devastated in our own way or we wouldn't be on here arguing about it! It is just ridiculous to say that young people did not know Shannon and Blind Melon the way we do because all of us were here on the forum, at the vigil or rocking out in our living rooms to the first 3 cd's way before the reunion was even thought of.

Nel posted this on myspace and I know there is another thread started for this, but I thought it should be put here as well.....
"Dear Melonheads, This is a very difficult time for everyone. For two years we enjoyed the reunited band. Everyone has accepted the band and the name Blind Melon including myself. They all gave it their best and I personally know that the stress is always harder on the lead singer because if his voice doesn't measure up to what the fans expect, it's very painful for him. Please try to understand that if Travis's vocal chords were going bad, he had no choice, he is young and his future is music. He just couldn't sing Shannon's songs every night because his voice couldn't take it and that's all there is to it. The worst things that fans at this point can do is to be negative towards the band and Travis. If we could all just stay positive and say a prayer for everyone involved, maybe there is a chance that things could be worked out. Think of all the bands that have broken up before and have gotten back together. It wasn't easy for me to accept Travis but I think that he was the perfect choice. The power of positive thinking is an amazing thing. If we all focus on our love for the band maybe the positive energy will help them find their way back in time. Right now they need positive energy, without judgments and bashing, there's five of them, not one, not four, Blind Melon is a band, and Travis was a part of it. PEACE AND LOVE
nel and lillie"

I understand people wanting to speak their minds, but if you really think Travis sucked, you should have had the backbone to say it sooner. Not now when you assume you have people to back you up. That's all I got to say. I am not even talking about this situation really.......it is the people doubting his talent all of a sudden....even in Roger's letter he still did not for one minute say that Travis was not genuinely talented as a singer, song writer or a musician. If you are going to say that now then what are you really saying about the whole tour they have done for the last year?? It just makes no sense....

It is amazing to me that people are coming out of the woodwork to badmouth Travis when just a few day ago when everything was peachy, those same people were doing exactly the opposite. Whatever is going on between the band members it just that....it is between them. Who the hell are any of us to speculate or take sides? None of us know the whole story, we never will and we shouldn't because it's none of our damn business. Things do not always work out the way we want and I am sure this is not the way any of the 5 members of Blind Melon wanted things to be. The fact that they respect each others talents as musicians and they are moving on to do what is right for themselves is enough for me to want to support ALL of them. I have never been one to jump on the bandwagon.....all of us melonheads have that in common when it comes to Blind Melon, I have always thought they were the best kept secret. I refuse to jump on any bandwagon here....there are always two sides to the story, and no one is wrong or right, there are just different ways that people see things or reasons for doing what they do that others may not understand. We should all be respectful and appreciative that we got some kind of explanation from both sides, but bad mouthing any of the members is just uncalled for and I seriously doubt that is what any of them would want. It is just adding fuel to the fire and I hope none of the band members, especially Travis, is reading any of this because it hurts me as a fan to hear all this, I can't imagine how they would feel. Both sides said they did not want to talk bad about the other. It's kinda like if you say something bad about your mom it's ok, but if someone else agrees then you want to kick their ass? I am sure all of this bad mouthing is upsetting to ALL of them as well. People just shouldn't voice an opinion unless they have ALL the information, and unless you are a member of Blind Melon, you don't.
This all sucks and I am upset but I am gonna look at the bright side and be hopeful that in the future I will have two awesome bands to support! Blind Melon and Travis Warren....good luck to all of them!

Since Nel makes the shirts, I believe you can use any picture......last year we just went through magazines looking for pics of Shannon to use and as long as they are good, clear pictures she can make a shirt out of them. A few shirts were made from her personal pics but most of them are just the regular pictures you would find online or whatever. Can't wait to see your ideas!!

Quick......meaning before the vigil.....LOL, actually, I don't think it takes her too long to make the shirts so if you have an idea, go for it! If it happens to be too late it can possibly be used next year!

I posted a bulletin on myspace too but thought this would be a good place as well. Does anyone have any good ideas for shirts? Nel wanted me to collect some ideas from everyone and I will pass them along to her since she hasn't been online in a while. Think quick!!!
