well thats a Plus for me... i'm stuck workin this a.m. and wont get out til about 1:00... and its about an hour and a half drive from work.
hopefully it doesnt make it into a downer for someone that was able to make it to the acoustic thing but not the show because of one reason or another. :-( that would stink.

Okay, so the show in Columbus last October was amazing but a bit surreal to me. Add in the fact that the venue had NO sightlines and while I loved, loved, loved that show, it paled in comparison to Blind Melon's return to Columbus tonight.
The day started off great w/ the in-store. My wife and kids joined me at the CD store and while the conditions weren't optimal - it was hotter than hell in the store and I don't know that the store was all that enthusiastic about hosting the band - it was awesome to see an acoustic performance in front of an intimate crowd.
I had total plans to do a video interview with the guys before the show - even talked to Rogers about it and he said it was no problem - but it just didn't work out tonight. The Newport holds 1,800 (I think) and was the very first place I ever saw Blind Melon almost 17 years ago!!!! So, I was really excited about the show. I was actually a bit surprised at how many were at the show - maybe 700? I'm terrible with crowd estimates but the floor (there is a balcony - which was closed) was full as were the sides of the venue (I have a contact at the club and can probably get the exact numbers).
It's still kind of a whirlwind to me but the setlist (I haven't looked at any other setlists for this tour so maybe it's the same one) was very heavy on the first two records - much to my surprise. The crowd LOVED IT. I was up front the entire time - on the side of the stage (Christopher's side) - and just totally caught up in the moment. I was able to enjoy this show so much more than the October show. The whole show was goose-bump inducing but the moment that I really felt it was during "Soak the Sin" when Christopher and I locked eyes and I couldn't do anything but smile from ear to ear.
I would like to have heard "Dear Ol' Dad", "Tones of Home" and "Toes Across the Floor" but the band couldn't play all night (as much as I would have loved it). I was very happy with the setlist and playing on a bigger stage definitely suited the fellas.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - "Mouthful of Cavities" KILLS me every time. To me that song embodies Shannon and it's one of those songs that I kind of wish wasn't in the setlist (only because every time I hear it I come close to tears) but, on the other hand, I'd be really, really disappointed if they dropped it. Jeez, I'm getting the shivers just thinking about that song. I'm sooo glad Travis came along to bring this band back to life - I didn't realize how much I missed them until I watched them tonight.
After the show we hung out in the backstage area w/ Rogers, Brad, and Christopher. The journalist in me couldn't stop asking questions - some of which I've had for 15 years! (I got a lot of stuff answered).
Eventually we left the backstage area and went out to the street - the same street I used to live on 17 years ago - the same street where I met Shannon and the guys for the first time. I swear it felt like all that happened 2 weeks ago. The memories came rushing back and I had to pull Brad aside and say "Remember when we were walking back from my apartment to the club and you were telling me about this plan you had to sew Blind Melon patches into flannel shirts and sell them?" He, of course, remembered him. It was CRAZY to remember the exact spot that he talked about that to me so many years ago (along w/ sound guy Lyle).
Another great night. Another great chapter. And while I've aged quite a bit - added a few kids and a wife to the mix - I'm really thinking about going to the Cincinnati show next week. I almost feel like I have to. Maybe we can do the video interview there!

Chip, reading your post got me all goosebumpy. What an experience this must have been for you. Posts like this really capture the emotion so many of us are feeling about this reunion. I'm so happy that you have had this experience, its like everything is coming full circle. I hope you get a chance to go to the Cincinnati show. So many of us would love to see an interview by you on video!

Wow Chip! Those are excellent pics and your review summed it up for me as well when I saw them in Detroit. I don't know how anyone can go to these shows and take pics. I can't stop singing and moving at a BM show so I would never have good pics
