A conversation came up last night about Who/what a "hippy" is. During the conversation, I sort of came to the understanding that it is probably an individual personal definition.... with quite a range too! I know some people call themselves hippies because they like to smoke #kos# ..... Because they love everything and everyone.... #hug# because they are very left-wing and probably against the gov't on some level... #gun# .... some who just like to not bathe or shave....wear dirty t-shirts and play the guitar #bath# .... or some who are simply rebels and like to be themselves #peace# Which is it friends? I think it would be fun to learn how melonheads define a "hippie" .... and maybe share if you think any of the Blind Melon band memebers were/are "hippies" #bee#

"I hate the word 'hippy'. I hate a lot of people, and hippies don't do that!"

Good topic Agree with those 2! #yes# Here's a few of my ideas: -Have an interest in saving our planet -May like to enjoy a bit of smoke once in a while #kos# -Like to live organically -Don't mind sharing -Don't buy into our consumer driven society -Idealist -Against violence I wouldn't call anyone a hippie today because the originals were a product of their time. How about finding a new word for todays "hippies"? I'll try to think of one #peace# #blindmelon_01#

Hey Karen, guess what? Today on the radio, I heard an old song from the Bellamy Brothers. "He's an old hippie, and he don't know what to do, should he hang on to the old, should he grab on to the new? He's an old hippie, this new life is just a bust, well he ain't tryin' to change nobody, he's just trying real hard to adjust."

Well there are sterotype 60's and 70's Hippies, and then there are like today's hippies, and I think we are alot different because things have changed so much, I think being a hippie really has to do with values and how you live your life. Wearing tye dye and smoking weed doesn't make you a hippie. I think having a good heart, and open mind, and a "I dont care what anyone thinks of me, I will be myself" attitude makes you a hippie.

I think Bee Happy, Ishbell and Gelfling all gave good interpretations that I tend to agree with. My definition of a hippie in today's terms would be someone who does everything they can to protect the Earth and respects the environment in general. People who try to live a natural and/or organic lifestyle. It would also be someone who is skeptical of the government and corporate politics. People who are open minded to ideas. People who would rather help others than hurt others. People who try to live a positive approach to life. I think someone who lives more than one of these ways can be considered a hippie. I think of it as a good thing and that if everybody lived by these principles the world would be a better place. And yes, I consider myself a hippie. I think it sucks how the word has a negative connotation to it because in my mind a person who tries to live with these ideals is trying to be anything but negative.

I also agree with you there Sonja, I tend to do most of my shopping at Organic/Mom and Pop places and stay as far away from Wal-Mart and McDonalds as humanly possible.
