HELLO EVERYBODY, I am absolutely thrilled by this necklace I just purchased and I want to put the squash blossom on it. If you believe it or not I have for 10 years have made it a habit of mine to whenever going to any new city while travelling, scour pawn shops looking for this type of bead work. The necklace Shannon wore (at least I heard from every silver smith I have talked to says) is the most valuable part of the necklace. In fact even the great silversmiths will not make an attempt to make this type of necklace. I should know I have asked on numerous occasions and have got a flat out No! to my asking, or the Silversmith asking me to open my wallet and letting him take all major credit cards and money and anything else that would fall out as he shook my wallet - making sure he got everything he could from me. Here is a little bit of imformation on the necklace. It was owned by an elderly woman that has had it most of her life (at least 3 generations old), and collects Indian and Mexican jewelery.I am not sure what type of necklace it is called. I have been searching on Ebay and the most common name has been "Pawn" Bead neckace. On the cones it is marked Sterling Silver and also on The cones it is marked with three rain drops marked by the artist. I took this to a jeweller, and since I paid $250.00 I was thinking that any jeweler would say I over paid. However, the one I took it to said that it is worth more than what I paid, based on the fact that no one makes it anymore, but most importantly on the raindrop markings gives the necklace a history - since it was made by an indvidual craftsman and not mass produced. At least not in the sense we understand mass produced where there is a million of one type necklace. However, it would be illogical to believe that just one person made this necklace and marked them indivudally, but what I have come to understand is that he probably owned a shop and locally produced them, but since theey were individually stamped there is not a lot of these (marked with the raindrops) If I can find the artist who makes it - this could give me clarity. I would like to find a book on more history of it, or if I can make it to the Vigil see what SHannons looked like- since I hear Nel wheres it, and find out what that type of bead work is called. On to the squash blossom debate. I will be getting a squash blossom made by Art Tafoya - one of the best silversmiths in New Mexico. (Can anyone tell me why silversmiths are such a hot commodity in New Mexico) www.arttafoyastudio.com/arttafoya/main.aspthen put in on myself. Or I could also get it cut shorter and sell the other half. I am very scared to actually take it to a silversmith. I need to find someone I actually can trust who specializes in Navajo jewelery, however anyone who does specialize in Navajo jewelery instantly knows that is worth a lot and will (a) not want to seperate it in to two pieces (b) or there is the risk I might not get it back (I generally do not have a trust for silversmith) or (c) I will be destroying a beautifully crafted necklace. I myself do not look at things in a material way it is just a necklace - Right!

Squash Blossom
The website that I provided with you above will make you a Squash blossom if you send him a picture - it may take a while depending on the amount of work he has, and since it is New Mexico there seems to be a lot of work for this, but remember it may take while for him to start it. I only give his website since he told me that he could do it exactly the same - and he is one heck of a silversmith. As for the bead necklace everyone says just wear a regular one and put the squash blossom on it.
The Squash Blossom Shannon wore seems to completely unlke any Blossom out there.
Who would have thought that Shannon's necklace had so much individuality, and authenticness that it does it is truely remarkable
Hope this helps anyone interested cheers

Hello everyone, Wow hightimes! That is waay too awesome! I have tried to find information on Shannon's necklace here on the board & independently searched for a necklace or squash blossom that even looked similar to Shannon's without any luck but what you have looks to be EXACTLY/almost EXACTLY like Shannon's necklace minus the squash blossom! Wow! I recently found the best picture of Shannon's necklace when I was able to purchase the Rolling Stone magazine with Blind Melon on the front cover. I have it here at work with me & it looks like your necklace is pretty dead on! LUCKY YOU! Well just wanted to give you my opinion & thanks for showing/sharing. Have a great Melon filled day everyone!

Hello 1Blindmind,
I was wondering if you had a chance to look at the website I posted. THe necklaces, braclets, and all the work that Art Tafoya does is awesome take a look at the snake and the butterfly just an incredible amount of detail he puts into it. I am thinking of getting one done with it inscribed something to dedicate it to Shannon rather than wearing an identical necklace. Anybody have any ideas.

Hello hightimes, Yes I did check out the website & wow he does some awesome work! An artist to say the very least. And like you said, the detail in each piece is unbelievable. Also, I like your idea on having a necklace made. No doubt it would be made right & by someone who looks to be a perfectionist! Keep us posted on what you decide. I would love to see the finished product if you decide go that route. Have a great day everyone!

HELLO IBLINDMIND, I am glad you have had a chance to look a website - as you notice the real detail craftsmanship is displayed the higher the price it is. Some of those that are in the $600.00 to 1200.00 range can take many of months to make them. I would have to say to get one made similar to SHannons would probably no more than $150.00 of course that is the maximum I would have to say it is probably less than that to make it. That is why he is the best bet to get a necklace made by him since something like Shannons is simple to make for him as opposed to getting it made by a silversmith who is not that good and who will try and charge you an arm and a leg. I am currently trying to find more up close pictures of the necklaces this is the best one I found on the website Anyone have any good pictures of the necklace. I remember there being a great one in a CIrcus Magazine back in the mid 1990's with Kurt Cobain on the cover anybody have it by chance.

Hello hightimes & everyone, Yes I can understand why some of his jewelry is more expensive. With that kind of detail, it is more like a work of art. I can only imagine how much time is spent on each piece he makes. Well thanks for the info hightimes & have a great day everyone!

Hello 1BlindMind,
I finally got a picture of Shannons necklace and have sent it to Art - I am going to get two made. One with the turquoise and red that Shannon has then another one with purple in place of the turquoise on top and red on it. I am also going to get it inscribed with some quote of SHannons I have to find something reasonably short but memorable. One of my favourite quotes is from "Mouthful of Cavities" - "Cause one of these days this will die... so will me so will you", but this unfortunatelly will not fit.
P.S. I talked to Art about the beads part and he has changed his mind for about a $1000.00 he would make the beads - I asked him who pay that, and he said there are people that would. I know if he did make them they would look exactly - not like mine which are similar looking, but not identical.
Anyhow, hope this helps you out. By for Now
