I was just wondering about Shannon's songwriting styke...for most non-BM fans some of the lyrics in his songs may seem unintelligible or unfitting but to me and I'm sure many of you even the ones that don't seem to fit still give a message and are relatable. Does anyone have any references from Shannon as to why he wrote songs this way- with seemingly random phrases thrown in? The only reference I can find is from the Letters vid where he talks about writing lyrics on something breakable, breaking it and then mixing it up. Any references though?
Thanks.

yeah i think he had bits of songs and lyrics here and there ya know when you kinda have ideas and write them down but they're kind of incomplete, then he went back to them put them together like a puzzle i guess. i dont think he did it for all of his songs, but i think thats how some of the more abstract ones came about...like soup for example. it works though, its the sort of thing i do... i do it with my paintings too. i can never stick to a theme or anything, but thats because i have no attention span so everythings just kind of mixed up and thrown in.
thats just what i think he did though

Shannons lyrics to me have always had a way of "saying thoughts" if that makes any sense...

I love that he did that, it was such a cool way of putting words together that would have a sincere meaning for anyone who really listened. There were raw emotions, honesty and bluntness rolled into a tastey melon burito, and you get to "pick the fixin's for that day". .. choose which tune will help you through another day if you need to, or if you are simply happy and mellow, it is there for appreciating and admiring-- the way you do beauty that comes from nature! I feel like I can find something to identify with in the lyrics on any given day (of course) but there is something for any mood I am in. Also, this "random" theme extends itself into the band, and their individual musical sytyles. I know Matt has appreciated how each of the musicians are all doing something something completely different when they play, but it just works for them--and maybe that is why there are so many of us who have been really touched by Blind Melon. (Perfect!) I wish I knew more about it all, but for now, I guess I'll simply appreciate and keep reding and learning from all of you at this great forum.... gonna go listen to Galaxie now. Gotta get pumped for another day! PS-- guess I'm also in the mood for Mexican food! Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner.

lol thats true i love the way you can just tell with the lyrics that at some point they kinda sat down and all put thier own little bits into it and like you said, how when they play they seem like they're all doing something completely different but its not chaos....it goes together so well...its such candy for the ears, and mind, and to be honest, Blind Melon gives me a buzz. i think soup was definately the right name for the second album, like they said, they all put thier own "ingredient" to it

Yea, he tosses a few random things that don't make sense to us. I was looking some stuff up.. For example, in Dumptruck: "and Bub I know that you could fly a mile high" doesn't make much sense to us. But, that was Shannon's way of giving a shout-out to his friend Bub Cadwalder, who died of cancer.
2x4 seems very random yet it's just a description of the feelings he had while on heroin.
Wilt has random written all over it. But after knowing that the song is about the band's tour bus driver having really bad breath, the lyrics become much more clearer.

I love the band because they're one of a kind, nobody like them; quirky, funny, sad, honest. Sometimes what I read about them here makes me giggle because they could write lyrics on almost anything (like bad breath) and sometimes when I listen to certain songs it makes me want to cry because it's so honest, pure and tortured. Whatever Shannon did creatively to come up with his lyrics was pretty brilliant.

I love his/their style. That is why I listen to them so much. I wouldn't say the lrics are sporatic, just that they may have a deeper meaning in the end. IT depends on if you take them literally or contextually. Not sure if I spelled that right or not, but I love music for that reason, you can take the vibe, the words, & the music to mean whatever you want and make it your own in that special way.

I think i wrote this in some other thread but anyway..
There is something very special about Shannons voice and lyrics that gives me a great feeling that i don`t get from anyone else.I can`t really explain what it is and it doesn`t really matter either.I`m just happy and greatful that Shannon/Blind Melon makes me feel so good.

Yeah my view of Blind Melon's songs has matured somewhat since this post and I now realize that you can't always take the lyrics to mean any one thing. Shannon writes very ambiguously and is great at using words to paint a mood or give a certain vibe. If you look at Blind Melon that way you can get alot more out of them. Shannon in my opinion was a master wordsmith and his skill of using words to draw emotions, moods, or hint at a deeper meaning can be compared to Shakespeare.
