I have questions about some lyrics to Blind Melon songs and am hoping someone will be able to shed some light.
1. In the song 2X4, what is meant by 1X1...2X4?
2. What is the song Walk about?

I don't know what the 1x1 and 2x4 mean, but Walk seems to be about Shannon's ongoing battle with addiction. In the lyrics to Walk he seems tired of being strung out, he's feeling bad about himself and recognizes that he needs the support of his loved ones. He's ready to "take a breath and try again" to get clean. That's how I interpret it anyway. I haven't read anything concrete where he discusses the meaning of the song or the story behind writing it.

That's how I see it too Gabbee... It's cool though, how you can interpret the lyrics in a way to fit your own life, and at the same time, know what it was actually written about.

A 2X4 is a plank of wood... that is what i know it as, but i dont think it is Shannon's definition, so im not entirely sure... I know Metallica have a song of the same name...

My thoughts on "Walk"...
"Find myself singing the same song everyday. Ones that make me feel good when things behind the smile ain't ok."
^Doing the same thing over and over that makes you feel good for "the time being"... However, it's a short remedy to a real feeling inside, that's not a good feeling.
"Around and over and in-between the seas. I need to be on top of a mountain where I can be see everything, cause this paranoia's getting old."
^Feeling paranoid... "being on top of a mountain" is a reference to being in control, and seeing everything as a whole. Since he didn't have the grasp on that, alcohol and drug abuse took the place of being in control. You feel like your paranoia disappears when you ar under the influence. Fact is, it's just a mask... and is temporary.
"Now as I open my eyes to start another day, I'm in a pile of puke, empty bag of execuses. My love for friends and family: you know I need them"
^Waking up, not being on that mountain...but being at a much lower view point. Realizing that the mask worn to rid of the paranoia ended up making things much worse... He has no excuses for what he's done besides the fact that he needed the "temporary" feeling of being in control. Knowing that it definitely is a mask, he tries to turn to others to help rid of the mask.
"And under a sun that's seen it all before, my feet are so cold. And I can't believe that I have to bang my head against this wall again."
^Even though the sun may be shinin' (or what his family and friends tell him)... he still feels his unhappiness about the way he copes with things (cold feeling)... He hates the fact that he's doing the same thing over and over to escape what he's truly afraid of.... Yet, he keeps doing the same thing, over and over...
"But the blows they have just a little more space in-between them. Gonna take a breath and try again."
^Each day, he may have told himself that he was slowly getting better... And, that he was going to do his best to take away that temporary mask...
-------
Just my 2 cents.
