I have mentioned this in couple of posts and have gotten no opinions, so I was hoping to get some here. Glenn said Travis wrote Harmful Belly and I think it sounds like a subtle tribute to Shannon. He could be talking about a girl, but the line "just to hear your scratchy voice" leads me to believe this song could be about Shannon. There are other more subtle lyrics that make me feel this way also and would love to discuss them like I do with my best Melon friend, but that would take a lot of time and typing. Any opinions, or possibly a factual response from Rogers or Glenn?

That's an awesome idea-- I too would love to hear from the band on the subject! It's fun to speculate and come up with our own theories, but I do love to hear the TRUE stories behind the music I love.

To me it sounds like it's a love song about a guy who maybe fucked up a relationship and the girl left and now he wants her back but she ain't havin it. He's saying he'll do anything no matter how crazy or violent it might be to have her back. I don't think it has anything to do with Shannon when you look at the lyrics of the song in it's entirety.

Yeah it's written in too much of a present tense to really be about Shannon in my opinion. And if it is written to Shannon then things like "kill for you and nothing less" seem a wee bit fanatical . But who knows maybe I'm looking too much on the surface.

I agree with Sonya, when you read the lyrics it really makes sense.

I was married to someone else before I was married to Greg and this song reminds me so much of my ex. He literally did carve my name into his chest...at the time it was very sweet and surprising but eventually I realized that he had some major issues. I hope Travis was just speaking figuratively...

The closest I ever got was, christ I was 16, and you know "IN LOVE". So I started carving my girlfriends name in my arm with a paper clip, I got done the first letter and realized how much of a foolish decision this was gonna be when I'm older. 13 years later, the scar of the letter A is still in my arm..

I immediately thought of shannon when i heard that line. I believe the song the band, or I guess Brad, did write about shannon is Stomping the Fuse. The whole band played on that cut on the album and I read that it was about shannon. I would personally love if they played this song live. It's my favorite tune on the Jalopy disc. The whole band played on On the Blink too. I've always taken this one to be about shannon and the band as well, though I read that it's not. Granted this Abandon Jalopy tangent is slightly off topic but I'm still talking about songs that are about shannon

Guys and girls this song has been played played for many years by rfr and has been develped many times over. This song has been through many changes from all acoustic to heavy. I think that the version released for you(us) all to hear with Brad, Chris, glenn and rogers is the one of the best ever. Thats not to discredit the members of rfr who helped bring this song to life many times. all in al its a great tune.

I feel for ya....tattoos can be covered, scars can't. It definitely makes a statement though. I married young (big mistake) and he was probably 18 or 19 when he pulled the carving stunt - he heated the knife up with fire before he did it. I know there is no way he'll ever be able to cover it. Oh well...it's not my problem anymore. It's weird to think how crazy my life used to be.

I see Harmful Belly as a love song too. When you mentioned for the first time how "just to hear your scratchy voice" could be about Shannon I found it an interesting thought and I was thinking how "why would you ever change, it's a mystery" could fit too, like why did he let himself die in a way...but the rest of the lyrics really seems like a love song to me.
