I always thought that Shannon was the main lyrical creative force behind
Blind Melon was Shannon,
but after listening and fully grasping Brad's solo after awhile it makes me question whether or not Brad or Shannon was the main creative force? I really can't explain it much better so, who, in your opinion was the main lyrical creative force behind Blind Melon? I'll finish this off with a quote from Glenn:
Shannon usually writes the lyrics, Brad (Smith, bassist) does sometimes, basically those two guys. But the music is all of ours." Glen, 1992

This is an interesting topic. I thought that a lot of the lyrics came from Shannon too. Describing his experiences and ways of looking at things. But, like you said, after checking out Abondon Jalopy.... and even the credits to the UTOG album that he and Thorn produced at Wishbone Studios (Matt pointed this out a little while ago)... I kinda think Brad may have been one of those secret leaders! You know, the jack of all trades, and has a personality that can bring out the best in everyone. I know, I am going on a rant about Brad Smith, but I realy love that every time I see pics of him with the band, or in interviews, he seems to be smiling. He never looks upset, angry or anything but just "going with the flow" and letting the creative juices flow. He really does seem to be just chillin with his friends, one of my favourite things to do! (yes #bee# , that spelling was for those melons in Europe ) So ya, after all that, I do think Brad had a large creative impact in the band's work too. I'm going to go pop in my AJ cd, and do some chores now!

They all played a huge part, and took equal credit. Did some others work harder? Tough to say. But, I will say this... Brad Smith is one of the most talented all-around musicians I have ever heard. Not only can the man write, perform, and play basically every instrument, he has a brilliant sense of production. I mean, the albums he's produced sound amazing!

I hope it didn't come across as though I thought Brad worked harder, or is any better than the others. I guess the more I learn about his work, the more impressed I get.
I agree that they all took equal credit, I think that is one of the reasons they are so much fun to watch--- they have a great chemistry, and compliment each other, musically anyway.
Speaking of "post BM" work, I have heard what Thorn, Rogers and Smith have worked on, and love it! Has Glen put anything out there? Has he worked in any other bands?

The singer of that band has a record called The Scoundrel's Waltz. Glen, Rogers, and Brad all play on the album. The first time I heard it, I thought "This is kinda like Soup without Shannon and Christopher"..

Yeah i think everyone had a huge part in the force behind BM, i mean...like they once said, they all added thier own "ingredient" I agree. Maybe Shannon and Brad contributed most of the lyrics, but they always saw themselves as a band that has no leader. I remember reading in an interview (I'm almost sure it was on Charle's site) that Shannon said something like "some people see a rock band as a singer and a guitarist but this is not how we see it, we all contrbute equal parts in this band."

I agree completely with the above statement and this questions purpose wasn't to say who was "better" or more of a leader or anything like that. It's hard to explain in words but I think you guys get what I mean. Hopefully lol =)

I really like Brad's album, i wish he'd come out with another one. Yeah, the songwriting is really good. I read somewhere that he had a few songs that didn't make the album that were really good, i think on amazon. And I recall reading somewhere else he was going to come out with a second album but that was a while ago. As far as the lyrics with melon i don't really know. But he did write their biggest hit I haven't looked at the booklet in a while but just about every song off soup was shannon wasn't it? "Thresher : What do you want people to know about Shannon Hoon that hasn't already been said? Thorn : Forget about all the bullshit. Sure, Shannon got into tons of trouble, but the point is, he was a great songwriter. Listen to the record --Shannon had things to say. Everyone has problems, everyone fucks up, and he fucked up. That shouldn't take away from the fact that he was a brilliant songwriter and a great guy."
