I had a long conversation with Shannon's mom, Nel last week via phone....I won't go into details of our talk except to except to say it was emotional for us both. We talked for over and hour and touched my heart, with her struggles both in the past with Shannon's death and in the past year with recent struggles. I have my own issues, and we talked about that....bottom line is that she is an amazing woman, that needs to be cherrished, hugged, and helped in any way we can...I just can't put into words how it felt to talk to her...her son has changed my life, and now even she has.
She mentioned there being a lot of candle wax all over Shannon's grave stone. This did not upset her, ...she realized it is out of love that the wax is there...At the same time, she mentioned wanting to have it cleaned for her boy. I want, and have set up an account to donate to for us to suprise her by cleaning the stone this summer. I have contacted local people in Indiana, and it is pretty reasonable to do.
I am not sure if any others have spoke to her about this, or offered help...if so let me know. I think she deserves this surprise...whether we do it to suprise her, or just give it to her for her to do.
Either way, she is a sweetheart that I want ot help, and opens her hearts to us every year...let's show her some love year-round.
thoughts?

But, instead of raising money to have people clean it up, is there no one that would take the time to do it themselves, out of goodness? Personally, if I was close by, I wouldn't mind taking a day to manually clean up the stone. It doesn't seem like a super tough job to do... A little heat (if it's going to be done during winter)... scraper...

If I lived close I would do it.....
I gather she has looked into it herself just by talking to her....

I'm sure when people, from the area, read this... they'll donate their time.

yes, when i was @ her house around vigil, and some time later she mentioned she was going to have to get Shannons cleaned and polished.
with Tim's right next to it, she said it was very noticable how much Shannon's had gotten dingey.

I discussed this with her recently as well but I think we need to remember that Shannon's stone is almost 15 years old while Tim's is new. It gets cleaned after the vigil every year but not polished. If you spoke to someone who knows how to clean AND polish the stone properly I would kick in too. Maybe it can be done right after the vigil and collected for until that time?

Oh man, I would so do it if I wasn't in Europe! I am hoping to make it to the vigil this year but I'm getting married and moving to the States so it's all up in the air at the moment! I don't come here often enough to know you all or know where you live but sure if you circulate the word enough someone will take care of the wax, at least. The polishing probably needs a professional and it can be costly but Nel can raise money at the vigil to do it. All this said, if there is ANYTHING I can do, please do let me know! Tiz

I spoke with her about this too. I think it bothered her to see how it looked next to Tim's being all new and shiny. I think she does clean it but it does need to be buffed up. Just cleaning the wax off doesn't really do it. I'm down for a donation but I would like to know the cost and I think someone who knows what they are doing should do it.
And Jay right on homie, good looking out!

This is a great idea but when I went to Shannon's grave on Oct 21 2009, there were actually some cemetary workers there fixing stones and cleaning up. Some of them ventured over to the gravesite to talk about Shannon and one of them said "The gravestone needed to be cleaned but Nel said she didn't want it done". I remebered that because I wondered why she wouldn't want it done. Maybe she did not have the money or whatever. It is still is a great idea and if it is Nel's wish than I would be more than happy to help contribute a significant amount to help out. I haven't met Nel but I know she is a great lady.

I have looked on-line and found that it can be done with a few simple things like a soft bristle brush, buckets of water and a non-ionic cleanser such as Kodaks Photo Flo that will clean without changing the chemical balance of the stone. Or you can use a product called Tilelab which is a granite cleaner for headstones. The polishing consists of a soft cloth or buffer and some simple polishes like Mother's Wax found in the auto care`aisle or even turtle wax. I would be happy to do this or help do this as long as it is`ok with Nel.

If I lived there I'd help clean the stone. But I was going to try to donate to the Vigil 2010. I'm currently low on funding so I'll see what I can do. But I think it's a wonderful idea!

i recently spoke to Nel again, and Tim's in new...that is the issue. Wax is still there and even when cleaned, the haze from wax remains. Even when times there in no vigil, people still stop by with tributes and candles whom cant come in the fall....its need a touched up cleaning, but even more a pollishing...
I'll look further into the costs, and will post soon!

Now that I hear more about it, it does sound like it needs to be cleaned by a pro.
Is it Granite?

I could tell from after not being to see Shannon for a long 8 years that it did look dull , but wasnt sure if it was from the protective plexi glass Nel had put on it to prevent the melting wax from the candles......it does need to be professionally polished. I wouldnt just experiment and and end up messing it up ....I remember when it was all shiny like Tim's is now and it does look dull in comparison to Tims now
