Just felt like putting up a fun poll for everyone. Two amazing singers both with an obvious relation to Blind Melon, but both with two very different styles. This isn't really for who you think would fit BM better, just who you like.

Travisty's solo work is amazing and definitely speaks to me in a high level. His contribution to BM was something that I will cherish forever and i will continue to listen to For My Friends as well as follow both BM and Travis during the remainder of their careers!

Shinn hands down... don't get me wrong, Travis is talented and all, but his voice does my head in... there's a naturalness to Shinn's voice, much like Shannon's, that is soothing and melodic, without the strain that Travis has... there is also something natural about Shinn's phrasing and control when he sings, when compared to Travis who is up, down, up, down, all over the place... which is why i much prefer Unified Theory and other Shinn projects (Everything is Energy, etc.) to anything Travis did with Blind Melon, or solo... i respect Travis as an artist and respect why he is great for people who like his voice, but i don't enjoy it, but that's just me...

I am grateful that Travis came along. I dig some of his solo stuff and the For My Friends record but, I'm going to have to go with Chris Shinn on this one. In my opinion, he's the better singer, hands down.

I love both of them but I have to say Travis. I based my choice I who I find myself listening to more but that could be due to the sheer volume of work Travis has produced vs. Shinn. I think Shinn is a great singer with a pleasant voice but Travis is a better songwriter. Travis MUST quit smoking, you can really hear the toll it's taken on his voice between the early recordings and more recent ones. I think Travis was a better choice for BM, his voice and attitude suited the songs better but I would kill to hear Shinn's take on BM tunes. I know recordings exist with BM and Shinn, dying to hear them. I'd also tip my hat to Travis for giving us new tunes more frequently, Shinn just gives us little tastes and lots of promises, of course BM has put nothing new out for quite awhile. You'd think they could throw us a bone every now and then, loyalty deserves reward.

some good responses i'm on the same boat as a few of you here... i think travis is a more talented songwriter. i really like what i've heard so far from Rain Fur Rent (assuming he wrote that stuff). Shinn's solo stuff from what i've heard isn't very standout aside from the vocals. But he's got the most unique voice i've heard. Very soothing and melodical, but he can really get aggressive too. Every time i listen to the song ' not dead ' from UT's first album... that's just beautiful stuff.

I like the rawness of the version of 'not dead' from the Celia Green demos.

The initial post said this was for fun and as soon as I read that I knew it had the chance to become ugly. So before I post my opinion, I think I am going to bite my tongue, rethink my thoughts and then post my opinion on who I like...and why...without ripping the other guy.

It really depends on my mood. I enjoy them both, but I find them hard to compare. Travis is definately more raw sounding. Shinn is so melodic and dreamy. I like they way Travis turns a phrase, but I find alot of his sound (atleast what is up on his myspace right now) very similar from song to song. Shinn's body of work "sounds like him" without the songs sounding similar. So, I think Shinn is the better singer in terms of control and melody. That could also be due to how much longer he has been doing this then Travis. If Travis had the right band and quit smoking (totally agree about the voice change due to smoking), he could be major. He is extreamly talented. Man, all this talk of Shinn makes me yearn for another UT album!

Chris Shinn is a rock star. Travis Warren plays music. Sounds like someone has a man crush , just kidding. Yes, Shinn is polished if you are into that sort of thing, never having to work in life and having unlimited resources might have helped him with that. To say Travis just "plays music" is an understatement and not really fair, obviously you have an extreme bias, but it is just your opinion. If you like Shinn, cool, no need to bash Travis for that, personal taste figures so much into this anyway. I also would have to give Travis a notch up for his musicianship, he is a hell of a guitar player. Someone mentioned T's songs sounding the same, I think that has more to do with his limited recording process, again Shinn had a LOT more resources for his recording.

Not sure how the option got switched.. But, I'll be moving this thread to the Travis section of the board. Only staff are allowed to creat threads in this section. Don't know how this one slipped through..
