From Travis' recent blog: Well, anyone who knows me well, knows I'm not the biggest fan of major labels. Besides the fact they're satan's liitle helper, greedy,non-talented assholes, AND they own YOUR songs(that you wrote) at the end of the day , they're going down hill faster than you can say,"Oh My God, That's SO 2004!!!!" So I came upon this site and well, I'll get to the point, I couldn't of said it any better, see for yourself and make sure you have a cig in one hand and brew some coffee because it might take you a while to read this, it's a bit long to say the least but well worth it.......................................................................Check it out: blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=48385346&blogID=328069395

i dont know where i stand... what it does not cover is that the public is stupid... they take what they are fed, and if Pop is on todays menu, then Pop is what people will buy & download... even if it is free, they will still download shitty contemporary stuff... you cant teach the public to like unknowns, and i will doubt that everyone will constantly go around and spreading by word-of-mouth, and even if they did, it wouldnt get far... plus if good bands were actually found, how would word spread quickly enough for them to become popular immediately...
furthermore, this person is devaluing the musician... art comes at a price and they should not have to compromise by giving away their art to the public for free... surely the best do it for other reasons than the money, but as the artists they should be rewarded for their recordings... what about those bands/musicians that dont tour at all and their sole income relies on album sales, how does this help them?
this bloke is obviously not a musician, just a greedy listener... sure cds could cost less, i would total endorse this, but it is not the musicians fault college students and such are poor and cant afford to pay for their music, they should have to sacrifice other areas, like not spending all money on nightclubs, partying and alcohol... it is about control, and speaking as a college student i know that you have a lot of extra money if you dont go out spending it on nights out... or if they can afford a computer and the monthly payments of the internet, they can alternatively afford cds...
what about movies and dvds will the same happen here too, will he say "hey we want movies for free too" they are in the same category eyt this bloke fails to mention them...

I see your logic. I have a hard time wrapping my head around it myself, but I just want to point out that the person who wrote this may in fact not be a musician, but the person who posted it on their blog in support of it is indeed a musician. There must be some sense to it all if Travis (who [along with the band] is in the midst of releasing an album and therefore is directly affected by this) is rallying around this writer's words. I do think it's an interesting topic. I think it's great to get a variety of opinions on the subject considering there is a lot of music trading done here (myself included).

that is what confuses me a bit, and makes me not really understand where it is at the distribution of music that is... i can understand Travis because he has been competing in a Pop dominated mainstream market and he has probably felt let down by the system... all the new big bands coming out in Australia have gone independent, i totally dig that, and this is what it should be, no intermediary at all... the guy in the blog however seems to devalue music to a disposable form... music isnt disposable, it is a privilege, it is an occupation like any other job and with a job comes a paycheck and musicians deserve all they can get for the happiness they bring people...

Here's my reply that I posted in his blog if anyone cares to get into the discussion... One of the major issues I have with this whole thing which the writer didn't really touch on is that it would not be such a "problem" if the technology didn't exist where people could get the music off of the computer and onto another music playing device so easily. The labels should be suing Apple for selling the iPod and every computer company that installs a cd/dvd burner and user-friendly burning software in the computers they market...they should absolutely NOT be going after the consumers for downloading the music. Shit, why don't they take it a step further and sue all of the retail stores that sell the devices. They could treat it like the gov't. handles smokers and head shops...arrest the stoners and hassle the people who sell the paraphernalia. We all see how successfully that war is being won. The author points out that there was a point in time when he and his friends (as well as every other downloader) would download music from the internet, but it was confined within the computer. CD's still had to be purchased if you wanted to listen to your music away from your pc. So what changed? ...the availability of affordable iPods and other mp3 players as well as cd burners and cd-r's/cd-rw's. If the existing technology wasn't so readily available, it would be inconvenient for people (and we all know Americans won't take the time to do anything unless its convenient). However, the technology is available, and companies keep producing more and more efficient and affordable devices. These devices are so easy to use that a child of reading age who has basic computer skills can figure out how to use them. I don't understand why the labels aren't also going after the companies who are encouraging illegal downloading by profiting from the sale of "music paraphernalia". You'd think it would be more fruitful to sue other corporations instead of harassing the random little old lady over here and the poor college student over there. I guess the big corporations gotta stick together. Fuck the little people. Sony records will bitch about illegal downloading, but Sony electronics will sell mp3 players and blank cd's and dvd's in every store internationally that carries their brand. Doesn't that send mixed messages to the consumer? They don't care that they are fueling their own fire as long as their hand is in the cookie jar getting "their fair share" for something they had no hand in artistically creating. It reminds me of some really wise and though provoking lyrics from my favorite band... "I always thought this would be the land of milk and honey but I come to find out that it's all hate and money There's a canopy of greed holding me down" Here's another issue. Fuck iTunes. I don't even want to get into it but the shit is corrupt. I'm one of those people who still doesn't own a portable mp3 player. I like cd's with the artwork. Eventually I'll break down and get one b/c I have over a hundred gig of music on my computer and I'm tired of burning cd's. I can't keep up with it so an mp3 player would make my life a lot easier. As much as I hate what's going on, I love music and I'll do what I have to do to be able to listen to it.

To me it's no different than a racist white male politician who has illegitimate children with his black mistress. Utter hypocrisy.

Thanks Jason. That's just me getting my panties in a bunch about the world's atrocities. I'm glad you enjoyed my perspective on the issue.
