I don't think Chris Shinn will bring anything new to Blind Melon. He's talented and all...but this is Blind Melon we're talking about. If the band simply wants someone to be "fine", Chris is the guy. But if they want to usher in the next phase of Blind Melon, I believe they'll need something more special. Um, wow. I couldn't disagree with you more. That's your opinion though and of course that's fine, but in my opinion Chris is easily as talented as Shannon was. Shannon is a legend lost, Chris is a legend in our midst. Naysayers can say what they like now but if and when a new album comes out with Chris writing and singing with the band, you will all be blown away. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind on this. I respect all the Chris Shinn support, and obviously I'm outnumbered on this forum. Like I said, the guy is a talented singer/songwriter. I'm familiar with his work and have seen him live. We all have an idea of what he would sound like with the Blind Melon guys (i.e Unified Theory). Is that the unique future of the band you envisioned? I'm sorry, not me. There's a big difference between talent and presence. Chris is a great talent in our midst, but a legend? Um, no.

There are not many "legends" in the 90s music generation...
I wouldn't even need a whole hand to count the 90's legends.
Just my opinion... And, for the record... I could never stand Nirvana... Yes, the #1 legend in this genre would be cobain...
After Cobain, I'd love to see people's list of 90s legends.

My 90's legends - (I can't rank them) Shannon, Cobain, Perry Farrell, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley...
In regards to Chris, I was holding out hope that Blind Melon may choose to work with someone who has yet to carve their niche in the music world. Chris has already carved his niche in many ways.

Legends? Unfortunately, the 90's hardly bore anything legendary, in the eye of this beholder. Hendrix-Legend. Morrison-Legend. Elvis-Legend. Cobain-I'll keep my thoughts to myself about Cobain. They aren't nice ones. I'll just say he and Courtney Love were truly two peas in a pod. I can't really rank them either. But my top 5 off the top of my head list is: -Shannon Hoon -Layne Staley -Dr. Dre -Garth Brooks -Tupac The work Chris Shinn does with Blind Melon will be legendary. But that will be 21st century legendary, not 90's.

Legend is a big term, and yes we didnt see much in the 90's... i base legends on their success, talent and more importantly, INNOVATION; the significant styles that built upon contemporary music, rather than copied...
- Shannon Hoon - Jeff Buckley - Thom Yorke - Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Bjork - Kurt Cobain (even though i hate to admit it, but he started grunge, which the rest of the Seattle bands just copied, so i would hardly call anyone else there legends)

foreverlights - you need to listen to Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr, Pixies and Melvins. Kurt Cobain didn't start grunge. A lot of bands didn't copy him, he copied a lot of them... I will admit a lot of bands got more recognition after his band broke... The media invented grunge, they also killed it... that was a shame.. Nirvana is one of my faves BTW

sure ur absolutely right, everyone has copied from somewhere... if you look specifically at the bands u mentioned, whose music i know well, they ripped off bands like MC5 and The Stooges, who ripped off The Doors, who ripped of Elvis, who ripped off all the old bluesmen, etc... what about Zeppelin, all gods, but ripped off the entire blues discography... however, none of those bands u mentioned contained legends, or have achieved the success and status that Nirvana achieved, they were all underground... sure talent, but no legends... Cobain combined not just those influences, but a huge number of others, e.g. Daniel Johnson, etc. to create a fresh sound for the majority... as did the others i listed...
plus the question was 90's... those bands u mentioned were 80's... and youre right Nirvana got tagged with this 'grunge' title... however even though it was a tag, it was also a sound too... i just dont see anyone who personified that sound afterwards (and i LOVE bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam)... when they look back in the distant future, Nirvana will ALWAYS be the first band that comes to mind because this "grunge" was a large section of music in the 90's, and Cobain the legend that carried it, there was no single person bigger... if u noticed i picked artists who were from totally different spectrums, who made inroads that moved music in leaps and bounds in completely different directions, rather than just pickin similar sounding bands... that would be bias if i did that... this is just my opinion...

I really can't argue with many of the "legendary" candidates listed. Just because they didn't invent the medium doesn't exclude them from legendary status. Guys like Buckley, Thom Yorke, Maynard, Bjork...all artists who established distinctive sounds inspired by their heroes...in the same way Elvis was a Southern white, male Big Mama Thornton, the same way Plant was a British Muddy Waters. Shannon wanted to be Robert Plant in many ways...but it was filtered through Indiana...through his personality.
