I went to the Blind Melon show at the Varsity in Baton Rouge on the 22nd and just wanted to say how absolutely blown away I was.
I am a huge, and younger Blind Melon fan. When Shannon died in 95 I was 8 years old. Now I am 20, and have been a fan since I started going to summer camp! I have always said that if I could go back in time, I would meet Shannon Hoon. His lyrics say everything I never could.
Anyway, I have friends (fellow melonheads) who would not go to the show because Shannon wouldn't be there. I feel the same sadness...that in my lifetime I will never see him, and never could have...but I had a chance to see Chris, Rogers, Glen and Brad and I wasn't going to miss it. I wanted to be with the people who knew him, and to support travis...those are big shoes he has to fill.
I was a little skeptical, but then the band came out and opened with Galaxie...and I've never been more excited. I thought I'd only get to hear that song from recordings.
That show was the best musical performance I have ever witnessed in my life. Everyone there was so joyful (except for some ex sorority sisters who got mad at me when I pushed through the crowd because I needed to use the restroom---says alot about greek life and "sisterhood"...ha). All the band members had big smiles on their faces and looked so appriciative. There was just this presence in the room...the mood was indescribable...it was like Shannon was there in spirit to celebrate the return of Blind Melon, along with the sold out show.
Travis did a great job and never overshadowed Shannon's legacy. Some people might not accept him, but I accept Travis as part of the band. He will never be Shannon, but fans cannot campare the two. Shannon was Shannon, and Travis is Travis. I see it as Travis is continuing Shannon's legacy and keeping Shannon's words ALIVE, to spread to younger fans who (like me) never ever thought they would see their beloved Blind Melon preform again.
It is indeed a joyous time for music!
To the Band: You guys sounded great. Absolutely amazing. The show in Baton Rouge was breathtaking. Everytime I went to the varsity, I would see that rolling stone cover framed and hanging on the wall and would say to myself, "at least I am in the same place that they all played in once...". You made me dreams come true. I was face to face with all of you; people i recognize only from photos and the DVDs I have. It was truely a magical night for me and I want everyone to know it. Blind Melon isn't dead...and never will be. This is the music that speaks to my soul. The music you make is the music I will pass to my children in the highest regaurds.
Shannon Hoon Forever, Blind Melon Forever.
All of my love to the band and Melonheads everywhere!
