My man and I decided to take a nice trip up to Skyland Drive today to see the fall leaves and do a little hiking. On our hike this herd of deer kept crossing our path and they were fantastic, I kept missing any good photo ops. The highlight of our day was when a BIG SCARY BLACK BEAR slid down from the top of a tree yards away from us! I was never so scared in my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had no idea what to do, my boyfriend grabbed onto me and I thought we were supposed to stay still but I wasn't sure. Luckily the bear decided to chase the deer instead of us and we hauled ass in the other direction. I didn't feel safe until we were back in the car. on the way....perfect sky, mountains in the distance a view of the valley a fork in the road, this is my boyfriend Neil if you look close you can see a part of a deer hiding....they camoflauge so well! some fall leaves

I agree with Joel, the light in the trees on the pic with Neil is wonderful. And the landscape there is really nice! When I was reading about the bear I was hoping for some pics but I guess it's not the thing that crosses your mind when you have a bear in front of you! Glad everything ended ok!

Gelf, your pics are wonderful. I had a very close encounter with a black bear when I was camping during college, and ever since then I have felt like bear is my spirit guide. It is totally a rush when you are close to one, but I'm sure you can look back on it and know how special it was! Thanks for sharing your fotos of fall foliage.

Gelf, Ah nature! I've noticed the leaves changing while driving down the road, but I finally got to stop and enjoy the beauty for a moment today behind my house. My house backs to woods and while letting the dog out, NATURE just kinda stopped me in my tracks, so I just soaked it all in and it had a wonderful calming effect. Also, you have your location listed as Merryland. I asume that's Maryland. If so, what part? I am in Cecil county. Peace

hey 3arman, that is actually skyland drive in Virginia www.nps.gov/shen/ not so far from Maryland. I live in Winchester VA but work in Maryland, washington county. My legs are aching today from running so fast from that bear. Bears run fast and you could never guess how fast they move, it was insane. If I wasn't so scared it would have been cool to watch him, luck was on our side that he went after the deer instead of us.

Wow that's wonderful, love your pic, what a fantastic place, it seems so peaceful, quiet, and I really like the autumn colors of the trees and the leaves.

I would never advocate running from a bear, if you can help it. They can always outrun a human. And if you run, it might just trigger the instinct for them to chase you. I am very glad that this black bear had something else to chase. It also helps that you and your man were together. Most animals that could possibly attack you are less likely to attack two people as opposed to one person.

I know not to run from a bear, I knew then that you are not supposed to run from a bear....but its a different story when you are right there. Our instinct told us to run and it was so obvious that running was useless, that bear moved FAST!

I have a family full of outdoor types. They say the same thing. "never run". But like you said, it's a different story when it's right in front of you.

Is that in the Shennendoah's (sorry if I butchered the spelling)? I love your pics! Autumn is my favorite season and I think it's a great time to reconnect with nature. It's like there's something in the air at this time of year that energizes me and makes my soul happy.
