tripticket, I also think they sound like bluegrass-punk-rock. Good call! crazy innit? their sound caught me completely off guard. i just LOVE bands that surprise n the the way that you cannot say...well, they are like this or that. they really melt those three genres very well together, seemlessly. there are a ton of bands that i could not live w/out now, that in the beginning were just space fillers for me. I hear great qualities in these guys, and i'm sure someday soon the music is gonna hit me like a ton of brick. sonya n greg, u are lucky buggers! imagine seeing Harper, Avett bros. MM&W and wood brothers, and most likely BM in the same calendar year ;D

trip, I think you might feel the new album more than some of the stuff you've heard so far. It's got more of the singer/songwriter vibe than the party/bluegrassy vibe. It's definitely a lot more laid back than their previous releases. They still do carry a bit of the bluegrass sound just because of the instrumentation, but it's got a different feel than the older stuff. Another thing you should know is that in a live situation the show comes across more as a rock show...I think their studio stuff definitely tends to sound a little more bluegrassy. When you hear the songs live they come off a lot differently than they do on the album.
And by the way, don't feel bad if you're not into it, no matter what you think of them I'm just glad you gave it an honest listen! Since their sound is so unique I absolutely understand why people wouldn't be feeling it...I just think of it as how for instance I don't like Ween but I know there are thousands of people out there who are absolutely obsessed with Ween. I understand that they are doing something very original sounding and I'm always interested in learning about bands that have a fresh sound, but no matter how many times I hear them I still don't dig what they do.
In regards to the punk/bluegrass description, I agree that it accurately describes a lot of their material. I've seen some terms thrown around to describe their music such as "punkgrass" or even "thrashgrass" (I don't know if I agree with the latter). No matter how you describe it, it's definitely a unique sound. I wouldn't use either of those terms to describe the latest release though. They seem to be growing out of that label/stereotype or at least taking a break from it. It seems that they don't want to be known only for that, but they want people to recognize their songwriting ability and versatility as well.
It's funny because I'm discovering their entire catalog of music all at once so it's extremely apparent to me how they have grown and changed over the past few years. Their earliest stuff sounds very country/bluegrass to me and that's what I like the least. The most recent stuff is more in the folky or singer/songwriter direction. If you listen to them side by side it's hard to believe it's the same band sometimes. Personally I'm glad that they are moving away from the traditional bluegrass sound because I'm not particularly interested in that genre.

I feel exactly what you've said. i just recently got into Wilco, i mean i've heard bits and pieces here and there. but i just got almost their whole cataloge as well as a dvd documentary on the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's really cool to see the progression in bands, a touch overwhelming to see it all at once LOL. I also can see how live shows and studio versions of tunes can be a totally different vibe. infact Jeff Tweedy of Wilco seems to begin writing in what he says "always begins as a folk song on acoustic"which will be backdoored in the studio, and then revamped live. that's great for true fans of any band, to hear tunes in a new light. I'll give the newer stuff ago as well! diggit.

so I don't know how I missed it but the avett brothers are gonna be playing the one day I get to be at wakarusa this year. They're one of the two bands that close out the fest, I'm pretty stoked to see them live. I'll also get to see Medeski Martin & Wood, the wood brothers, michael franti and les claypool.

Bogo, I'm SO jealous! You're going to get to see 3 of my favorite bands in one day (and 4 of Greg's - he loves Les)! I don't want to leave Michael Franti out, he's awesome too...but I wouldn't consider him to be in my top 10 favorites.I promise you're going to have an awesome time! You're going to have to give us a full report when you get back. I hope The Avett Bros. blow you mind and everyone else's. I heard they left quite an impression on the crowd at Coachella earlier this year. What day is it that you're going?

Sunday the last day of the fest. I chose that day so I could see les and MMW the others are frosting on the cake. Though michael franti isn't one of my favorites I really want to see him live; he shares my hate for shoes. Supposedly gabbee might be making it down here, that'll be the first actual melonhead I've met personally.

Thanks Greg The only thingI left out that I think it was missing was a guitar pick. I tried to make a custom one with AB on it but the letters didn't look right.

man what a great show! it was the last offcial show at waka. I don't the brother's name that plays the guitar but he broke at least 5 strings and crowd was just eating it up. They also have one helluva following besides les I think it was the most high energy show of the fest. unfortunately I missed MMW but saw the wood brothers
