I am a huuuge fan of the band since the early 90's and like a million other people I was devastated when Shannon Hoon passed away. The guy was an absolute brilliant artist who's life I was following along with being that I was in a band myself at the time, was a big fan of Blind Melon, and I was also battling my own "demons" with a drug addiction for about 10 years from 1984 to 1994(everyday heavy weed smoker, popping qualudes & valium left & right, and snorting & free basing cocaine). I used to just kick back and listen to their songs while getting high and trying to write my own songs, and I could totally feel & relate to Shannon's lyrics because alot of them were about his struggles with drug addiction and his desire to stop & get clean. Believe it or not those songs helped me get through alot of my struggles and pain at the time, and now proudly I sit here having stayed totally clean & sober for 13 years and counting, but sadly and ironically Shannon was not able to find & follow the same path to sobriety I did while I listened to HIS own lyrics back then while getting clean.
So in my particular case his personal demons that he sang about, helped me eventually overcome my own.

Thanks everyone, and I forgot to add that the song "Change" was basically my personal anthem back then & at times gave me great comfort & hope. Also, is there anyway of getting this message and story to the band and to Shannon's mom, so that they all know that his death was not completely in vain(cause it sure as hell scared me straight and helped save my life)??

this is a pic I drew of Shannon along with the lyrics to a song I'm working on as a tribute to him and the others in Blind Melon. I'm sure I'm not the only one that can say that their music has had a giant impact on my life. I hope that they realize that they're not just making music, they are really helping people like me through good times and bad.

Very nice tribute there!! And I know that a few people have told me that Blind Melon's music is depressing or destructive and how can I like it, and I just tell them they have no idea what they're talking about and they've obviously not spent any time actually listening hard to their messages. To me their songs are stories about what goes on in real life and the different way people deal with things, and then they mix in several fun songs that make you wanna dance and celebrate life(sorry if that was all too deep).

That's beautiful justmyreflection. Welcome to the forum! There were times when nothing helped me more than Blind Melon. I probably said it a million times and it sounds cheesy but I don't know how I'd get through some of my hardest times without their music and lyrics.

It's so wonderful to go threw this thread and see how Blind Melon has done such great things for so many people.....I always say that a Melon show is like 12 months of therapy for me. It's so nice to see that so many others share the feelings #redlight_unity_02# #smilieblindmelonforum#
