I am from New England, lived in CO for some time, and I love the different expressions that come out of each sub-culture.
I just returned from a 5 day conference in St. Louis with a company I work with, and I met with so many smart and fun people. We had Keynote Speakers, famous authors, you name it, the cream of the crop was there to teach us something, and believe me we had our little notebooks out and ready for what they had to say.
I noticed a similarity with each of the "southerners" in their spekaing styles (other than the accents of course). I came back with an "expensive" message, because this conference was not free. I learned the secret to every charming little southern belle.... I learned that if you add the simple little phrase "....bless her heart..." after ANY thing that you happen to say about someone, and I mean anything.... you're still considered sweet and thoughtful.
Here is an example... "Oh my! Do you believe that woman left the house looking like that! It looks like she has two stomaches because the waist band of her panties is so tight!...bless her heart..." (to get the full effect, you have to tilt your head a little to the side when you say that part)
Anyway, I hope this is not taken as one of those wonderful "left handed compliments" I sometimes give without realizing until after.....(bless my heart...)
I actually love it! I had a great time in the midwest, saw some awesome live music, great musicians that can fiddle like a mofo, and I even returned with my very own cow-girl hat for my gardening. I wore it home, got a few looks when I returned to New England, but who cares! ha!
Does anyone have any other cute little expressions from other areas of the world? the country? ...I must say, when I lived in CO, I used to think it was sweet when people just call you darlin', even when they don't know you.
I bet charles, bobafett, bumcakes and beegrrl have a few to share! Please do!
So that's what I got out of that trip, those speakers are hired at about $50,000.00 a pop to speak at those things, and I came home with a new way to vent, blurt out the things I forget to fliter and hand out those left-handed compliments I mentioned---as long as I say "bless her heart..." it's still cool.
yee-ha!
