Awesome stories, I can relate to all of them. I was always the lone BM fan when I grew up, my friends liked the music, but they just did not hear what I did. The same way with the Doors. Both bands just go through me in a cosmic way. There was one other person, this guy Nelson I knew/know who loved BM as much as me. I am glad I found this site and really glad that Barbara shared her music with me. It felt like Christmas last week for me. I never thought I would get to hear some of those jewels.

i loved reading all the stories too, its great to hear how people became melon fans..
for me i was but a youngin who had just purchased the guns n roses dont cry making of video ( at the time i was a HUGE GnR fan before i grew up a bit more) i was absoultly blown away by this shannon guy and aside from thinking he was one sexy man, i loved his voice.. so where he says he's in a band called blind melon, i wrote that name down and next time i was down the street i popped in to my music store and said.. right i want this bands album... well no such luck cause at that stage it was not released here in OZ. i was so bummed.. and back then with no net it wasnt an easy thing to get ahold of.. but the wonderful music store owner ( ross.. god love him) was so used to me and my gnr obsession he phone a company in melbourne who did imports and it was soon on its way to me...
i can honestly say that from the moment i first put that disk in my ilfe had once again been changed by music ( i was also currently having a life changing experience through pearl jam) i could not get enough of blind melon i was instantly hooked and could not believe that i was fortunate enough to have found such a great band...
then of course a few months later the no rain single was released and soon the album was, ( i did not care that i had spent a small fortune to have the cd shipped to me, as i had a heads up on what was to become one of my 2 top bands ever) and the rest of OZ was treated to the wonderful sounds of BM...
i just had no idea that this guy from the gnr videos could of provided me with such an emotive album to sing, dance, smile and cry to more so than i had ever done with my previous fave bands. I feel that the album added something to my life that was missing, and i know it sounds silly but music really is the most healing art form to me, and blind melon really helped me through some awkard teenage times and feelings, and for that i will be ever greatful to them all..
i have never been so gutted as i was when my mum rang to tell me she had heard on the news of shannons passing, i cried a thousand tears, and sometimes still do.
So anyways a simple way they came into my life through another band, yet a powerful impression they made on me, and to this day i still love them with a great passion and that says something of the influence they had on my life, i have many bands that i say " oh yeah i used to love them once" but blind melon will never be in that category, they will be in the " oh i love them more than anything " category

I loved that story (as the others). I'll send Nel the link to this thread so she can read all of these stories. She'll love them!

This is just a copy/paste of what I had posted in a different thread about the two times I was fortunate enough to see Blind Melon live and meet them. I thought it probably fits better in this thread which is why I'm reposting it. I added a couple details. I started listening to Blind Melon in 1993 when a friend introduced my best friend and me to their self titled cd. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before and I absolutely fell in love with their music! My friend and I heard they were going to be opening for Lenny Kravitz on October 1st of 1993 and we scored some tickets to the show...It was in Fairfax (northern) Virginia which was about 90 minutes from where we lived. We were so pumped to see them live because the cd had not left the cd player for quite some time before the show. The show rocked and there is even a little clip I've seen online of Shannon singing a segment of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" that came from this show. After they left the stage my friend and I decided to leave the show to try and meet them. We weren't interested in seeing Lenny Kravitz. We walked around the building to the back of the Patriot Center and saw where the buses were parked. I'm bad at judging distances but the closest we could get to the bus was probably the length of a basketball court. I remember there was some type of barrier...maybe a cement road block barrier or something similar keeping us from getting any closer. I remember that Christopher came out of the building and started walking directly to the bus...he didn't look over across the barrier so to get his attention we hollered out his name. He looked surprised to hear his name being called out. At that point he walked over to us and signed things, talked to us, and let us get a picture. When Shannon came out the back door of the Patriot Center Christopher called him over. Shannon asked us why we were out there and not in the show. We told him that we didn't come for Lenny Kravitz, we came for Blind Melon. He seemed surprised that people cared enough about them to miss the main act. He stressed to us what a great show Lenny put on and that we should try and catch the end of it. I remember being so nervous and excited. I don't really remember much of what else was said (I must admit to being a little blurry about details that happened back in my "smoking days") but what I do remember is that they were so nice to us. I think at this point in my life it was THE best thing that had ever happened to me...there is no feeling like getting to meet your favorite musicians and being able to express to them how their music has touched your life. It's very rewarding when they are down to earth and seem to genuinely appreciate what you're saying. They took the time to really listen to everything we had to say. We didn't get to meet Brad, Rogers or Glen that night. Little did I know that a few months later this Blind Melon experience was about to be topped exponentially. We found out they were going to be coming back to our neck of the woods...this time only a 20 minute drive away...and they were HEADLINING! We got our tickets as soon as they went on sale. The day of the show (Feb. 23, 1994) we made sure to get there super early so we could get in the front row. When they had opened for Lenny it was in a big arena and we had pretty crappy seats...this time it was general admission in a university gymnasium so we wanted to make sure we got a spot in the front row. I remember this show as being the best show of my entire life...it was perfect in every way. The setlist was perfect, they even played a lot of the more rare stuff that we couldn't get enough of. After the show we figured we'd try to meet them again. This time a lot of people were waiting by the bus...they had definitely built a decent fanbase in the Maryland area. We were fortunate enough to be able to meet all of the guys this time and once again we were so impressed by how kind they were and they took time to meet every fan that waited and sign stuff and take pictures. I had everyone in the band sign a poster I bought at the show and I was able to get one of Brad's bass picks. We would have hung out there all night if we could but since we were only 15 and it was a school night we had to leave when our parents showed up to give us a ride home. The lyric "I only wanted to be 16 and free" really applied to us that night because I think if we were 16 and had driven ourselves to the show we might have just decided to run away and follow them on the road for the rest of the tour. My best friend and I wanted to be able to hang out with them so bad and when our ride showed up she came up with the brilliant idea to invite them to come back to her (parents') house and stay all night...mind you we were 15 years old...I can only imagine how ridiculous this must have sounded to them. She tried to entice them to her house by telling them it would be all good cuz she had a really big bed. She didn't mean it in a sexual way but the way she said it probably made them think they were being propositioned for a gangbang. What she should have said is that we had a kickass gravity bong loaded and ready to smoke and they might have taken her up on the offer. We laughed about it later. I have some of the pictures from this night posted on my myspace page which anyone who wants to see can click on this link: profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=37292820
