Alright so as you probably don't remember last year around this time I got the idea that we could cover a melon song, and people could contribute instruments to the song. So Matt and I were talking about dooing "letters from a porcupine", but that fell through because I don't think Matt was too keen on doing it lo-fi (since I was still on dial-up at the time and had windows 98, so i couldn't download and run fancy recording deals).
But to get away from my backtracking, I thought it might be fun to try this again, because last night I was listening to Soup in my bed, and "Skinned" came on, and I was really digging the front-porch jam-eeness of it, and I thought, "man, a jaw harp would totally sound awesome in this song." But unfortunately it was 4 o clock and i was too tired to get out of bed and get my jaw harp.
So then I was thinking today, since Azrael has a banjo and plays guitar, maybe we could colaborate. You could record the banjo and guitar parts, and sing too if you'd like (ah! I just got a good idea too! everyone that wants to colaborate, everyone could sing!), and then I could record the kazoo and play jaw harp...
Heh, just me dreaming of music and unity again...

interesting (I think I stumbled across last year's thread in my travels), I've been rather busy recently, what with work & my band etc, but I'll make an effort to get my banjo out as much as possible
I'm happy to do the banjo & guitar parts, but I'd appreciate it if someone could tab the banjo part out for guitar, then I'll transpose it for banjo after, it's pretty similar to the guitar part as with harmony but I just like to do it perfect
how exactly would this work with recording stuff?
oh & what's a jaw harp?

I'm on it. Er, well I'm not sure what you use to record with SIS, but i would record it to my computer probably. and then you or I could (try in my case) to mix it. Maybe Matt could, since I know he has the technology. Wiki for you: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jews_harp

I help out anyway possible. The only reason I wasn't keen on Lo-Fi last year was because it was a song we were going to send to Yakmusic. And the sound that was recorded was very "tape recordish"...ya know? Not that it wasn't good. You played it great! It just sounded like it was done using a tape recorder and no microphones.
Do you still have dial-up? Have you upgraded Windows yet?
Just let me know what you'd like from me, and I'll get on it ASAP. Let me know what you are using to record and I'll grab the same thing.

PS.... Ya know what? This give me an idea. We could do a full CD.. Featuring anyone ONLY FROM THE BOARD doing a Melon tune. If we could get at least 10 tunes together, I have no problem grabbing the songs from everybody and creating a CD, full cover art....etc. It wouldn't be a Tribute album.. it would be something like "BlindMelonForum.com - A Melon Compilation by the Members". Just a fun little project. And, if some songs are taped really raw, who cares? It's just a CD for us, right? I know there are plenty of musicians here that we could get something like this going.. just for the fun of it. We won't have to license the CD or anything... I'll just create the artwork, with (of course) people sending in contributions to the cover.. Maybe make a weird cover with blends of everyone's art work.. print the stuff out, seal it.. and send em. As long as my costs get covered, I think it would be fun! And, for those you dont want to get fancy and pay for the original, I can send them the artwork and they can print it out themselves.
I'm kinda really digging that idea. We can make extra and sell them (making no profit) at the Vigil if we wanted. Just a CD consisting of BlindMelonForum peeps jammin' Melon tunes... Sound good? cool! Sound bad? Who cares.. it's us, as a group, creating something for us, as a whole.

That's a cool idea Matt, if people want to cover the songs but can only do one part they could ask others to record it as J.R. suggested we do.
For example, I would help JR with Skinned but it would be his choice, or someone could help me with Tones Of Home but it would be my choice. Of course some people can do that whole lot on their own, or just play acoustic & sing or whatnot, anyway to get the song across.
I'm quite enthusiastic about this now since I've got the whole summer free.
I really like where this is going.
Oh & JR, I can record on my 8-track, but I'd have to convert it into WAV format before sending it to you, or I can use my computer & make it any format. I don't do this kinda stuff so I guess Matt would be our best bet, from hearing 12Daze stuff I have confidence he could do a little song like this.

by doing this, getting people to decide to do songs, & then setting a DEFINATE DEADLINE WHICH WILL NOT CHANGE...

Ok... I'll get the ball rollin' by send a mass PM to everyone in a little bit... It will have all the info (including a deadline which I think should be decided by all of us). So, as for now, let me know what you thinka cool deadline would be.
This goes for EVERYONE on the forum. If you have no "musical talents" and want to just sit back a recite "God's Presence" in spoken word (or another song, not taken)... cool. It'll make the CD. Sound doesn't matter here. This will be something for us.
So, start listing possible deadlines and PM songs you'd like to perform. If 2 members want to play the same song, just PM each other and work something out. If worse comes to worse and both people want to play the same tune... If there is enough room, then, who cares? We'll have 2 different versions of the song. If I have to make it a double CD, fine with me..
I'll do the hard part of putting the CD(s) together. As a group, we'll do the other hard part by creating something we'll all love!

Heh heh, I was thinking the same thing Matt, but first I wanted to see if there would be enough interest.. and that would be amazing if you made the art and such, sealed 'em and such...
And Matt, we've since upgraded our computer, to answer that question..
As for Az, I don't mind what you record it on. What I'm thinking is we could give the seperate tracks (banjo, guitar, kazoo, jaw harp, voices) to Matt, and hopefully he'd be down with mixing them together. I'm not sure how hard that'd be... 'specially with the jaw harp, 'cause what I'm thinking I'll do is I'll hear Az's guitar part, burn that to a cd, listen to that, and while I'm listening, be recording me playing the jaw harp on the comp.
I'm getting pumped!

Like I said... send me anything and I'll do my best about juicin' it up.
Ya know....even out real young members can participate (regardless if they have musical talent or not)... Just sit back and read a Melon tune as if it were a poem!
I'm sure once I type out a long description and mass PM everyone, we'll get enough people to participate. All I am going to do is email Rogers to make sure this is ok. If he says that it is, then it's a done deal!
Think about the inside cover. Remember the inside pics of Melon's first CD? We could do something like that with pics of our own... just an idea!

Ahaha, dude, that'd be insanely incredible! We could take pictures from the Post a Picture thread (with the posters blessings, of course), and collage them all together..
Hot damn, Matt, you're a genius..

this sounds damn cool I'm so up for this
JR I guess I'll just record my guitar & banjo parts (once I get the banjo tab that is) on separate tracks, I'll pm you about the details, & send them off to Matt
the colage idea is brilliant, I've just been rattling off some songs on acoustic & singing to try & create somit cool, if anyone wants guitar/mandolin/banjo parts I can do that, but I don't particularily want to do electric guitar as I don't feel I could do it justice

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH, this is an AWESOME idea!!! I'd love to partcipate! (I can't say I'm a guitar genius but as we said, who cares, right!) But - I have no idea how to record stuff! I only did it years ago with a tape player and once in a music studio but I don't see the guys that had that studio any more... I have a microphone on my compuer but how can I record stuff? I imagine I need a program...any ideas? And what about we post the songs that we want to do in this thread or another one, created especialy for it rather than by PMs, so that everyone can see who would like to do what right away? You guys totaly rock!
