Ok guys, just an idea... This year at the vigil Nel told us that if we wanted to we could make things (clothing, jewelry, whatever) and sell them at the vigils to help us make the journey back every year. She said she knows it's expensive getting there and she'd hate to see us miss it cause we couldn't afford it. Immediately the girls and I thought the same thing. We don't need to sell things, we know we'll make it back every year even if that means selling our bodies for a buck, LOL, but maybe if the money went to some kind of a vigil fund? I know people tried this before and it didnt work cause well, unfortunately most of us melons are poor and can't donate much. But how about donating our TIME to make things that could be sold at the vigils? The money could be used to helping Nel with vigil costs and to bring, or at least help bring a melon who has never been able to attend before... Imagine bringing someone from a far off country for the very first time!! I think it would really work if we all did this together.. Personally Im not very skilled, but hey Im actually going to start taking sewing lessons and do a little bit of crochet, maybe once I get better I could make some groovy skirts or purses or something like that? I know there must be someone who could make hemp jewelry, hand made sandals and stuff like that! Vigil shirts are already made to help pay for the tent and portable potty, so that one is taken.Tell me what you guys think? I think it could work... but once again, only if we work together on this one! I love you all and dream that one day we'll ALL be able to make it to Shannons birthday bash.. AT THE SAME TIME! With a red light shining on a little UNITY

hey when is his birthday and how can i find out more about the bash? it might be easier to help some people get there by setting up a carpool, but the craft selling could work too.
and whts vigilstock?

Hey Alex!!! Shannon's birthday is Sept 26th, and the vigil is always the saturday closest to his birthday (so next year it's going to be Sept 23rd). Then you can't miss Vigilstock, which is the tribute show that takes place the Sunday following the vigil... It's AWESOME! If you need more info on the vigil you should go to blindmelon.org and/or vigilstock.tk both great websites! Anyway, yeah I know carpooling is great, but I was thinking about the melons that are overseas... It's so expensive and we always have a few.. And there are tons that just can't afford to come.. So that would be a good way to help them out, whatever we can do to get them here you know? Just a thought... Peace

I've never been, it's too far for me travel, plus being a single mom, doesn't help much either can't really afford it, though I have always wanted to go
it's wicked that people here have gone, I would love to hear more about it and depending on what you want done, I may be able to help

We have SEVERAL Canadians that make it down every year... Hell I'd say half the people who attend are Canucks hehehehe... Im sure you could score a ride with someone if it came down to it... Many have before I'd love to tell you more about the vigil but it's just impossible to put it into words. I've only been to 2 myself but it's already become a priority in my life, no matter what is going on in my life I know I'll be coming back every year.... Just imagine a bunch of people (i think last year there were 300+?) gathered in the cold around Shannon's grave just playing music, singing, and getting to know each other... Shannon's family comes every year (the vigil is actually put together by his mom) and meeting them is deff the highlight of the event... Not just because they're Shannon's relatives, but mainly b/c they are fucking incredible... You gotta see it for yourself to be able to understand... But one thing I can tell you is try your best to make it, I PROMISE you wont regret it... You'll come back home a whole new person and with several new friends for life hehehe Oh btw, I have some pics (ok, too many pics) online if you wanna check em out public.fotki.com/gabbee

Yay! Yeah it would be cool to have everyone's input... I met this lady yesterday who runs the coolest vintage shop in the world (she looks sooooooo much like Nel!) and she offered to give me sewing lessons. She dug the skirt I was wearing and said she had made a bunch and that I have to see them! I have a sewing machine, fabrics, basically all the tools Im just waiting on a few lessons so I can start making shit for the vigil.. I'll keep you guys posted!

DO you really think if we all learned to sew it would work? I am game for that! I just learned crocheting and knitting, sewing is probably just as hard, but it would be well worth the effort! Who were you thinking we would sell this stuff to? And ideas on where the doanted money would be going too? I have a ton of questions about this, it's such a lovely idea I want it to work! It's a really good feeling to feel productive and like your work is actually going to make a difference!! Fill me in!

Great idea Gabbee, let's say 300 people go to the vigil, if everyone brings something that they can sell for maybe $10 that's $3,000. If there's a campground a bbq could be set up and burgers & hotdogs sold. Raising funds is something I've done in the past and it's amazing how much you can make. A basket could also be put together with Blind Melon stuff and candles maybe and people buy tickets. Yep, pretty good idea Gabby.

Maybe I am wrong--but do 300 people come to the vigil?? I think the selling of food would be a great idea and raise a ton of cash, but don't you need permits and what not?? Gabbee any suggestions?

It's a really good feeling to feel productive and like your work is actually going to make a difference!! Fill me in! Aww Im so glad you guys are as excited as I am! For a moment there I thought no one really believed in it so it wouldnt work. But anyway, on with the details... Yes I think it would truly work if we do it right.. Doesn't have to be just sewing, basically whatever we're good at. Like someone might be really good at making jewelry while others might come up with stickers, or whatever man. I was thinking maybe backpacks, purses, jeans and all that stuff with blind melon patches all over it. Since everyone at the vigil is a melonhead, Blind Melon shit is bound to sell. And yeah initially it would just be sold at the vigil to other melonheads... Maybe later on we could sell stuff on Ebay and whatnot. You asked a really good question though, where the donated money would be going to. I know people tried to raise some money for this before and Nel said she'd rather not be responsible for the money, which it's completely understandable since she already has so many responsibilities regarding the vigil. So the main thing would be finding someone that could be responsible for this money and that everyone could trust. I know no one would really ever steal from a fund like this, but it does take a lot of responsibility and organization, things I, for instance, dont possess. So, any suggestions? Omg that's such a great idea about selling food! Especially cause I know there are so many starving melonheads and we always have to drive out to the city to get something to eat. I dont think we can actually bbq there though, I mean it IS a cemetary... but maybe if we brought ready to eat food, I dont know.. Maybe cold sandwiches, cookies, drinks, etc. I LOVE the basket idea too, maybe some DVDs and bootlegs (wait, I dont think we can "profit" off of that though right?), pictures...? As for how many people come, hmmmm yeah it's usually somewhere around 300+, but that's throughout the day and evening... so it never really seems like theres that MANY people b/c they're not all there at once.

Yes, besides selling food, I think the best way would be that everyone does what he's good at and likes to do! It would also create a diversity of selling objects and that would be cool! I still don't really know what I'd do though...something melon related would be cool cause there's so little Blind Melon related stuff and I know I would be so happy to see plenty of it!
And what's that snails joke Charles, it's the second time it apeared, must be something that comes from myspace, what about sharing it with all of us myspace outsiders so we could all laugh together???!!! #broccoli# #banana# #bananadevil# #cucumber#
