Blind Melon @ The Rave, 8 p.m.
There’s something faintly unsettling about seeing a Blind Melon concert listing in 2008. It feels almost as if the concert promoter made an unfortunate mistake, or must be playing some sort of morbid joke. The “No Rain” group was so synonymous with vocalist Shannon Hoon that it had little choice but to disband after Hoon’s overdose death. But perhaps because of the ongoing demand for poppy, Southern-rock-inspired jam music, or perhaps because of VH1-induced nostalgia for that tapdancing bumble-bee girl, the band decided to give it another go in 2006, recruiting a new vocalist, Travis Warren (who sounds like an unfortunate hybrid between Hoon and Perry Farrell), and trying their luck with a new album, slated for release this April. Although early tracks posted to the group’s MySpace page are as tuneful as anything Blind Melon recorded in their heyday, the reunion will still feel creepy and opportunistic for many fans.

I really didn't like this part - "But perhaps because of the ongoing demand for poppy, Southern-rock-inspired jam music, or perhaps because of VH1-induced nostalgia for that tapdancing bumble-bee girl, the band decided to give it another go in 2006 recruiting a new vocalist, Travis Warren"
Hey, I'm all for self opinion, but maybe the writer should have done some research before assuming things.
Yeh, maybe even seen them live then wrote a review. I hope that he was rushed in to writing this. But, still thats no excuse. My wife and I seen them in Omaha. Really, I must admit while I was waiting for my drink they came on and at first I thought they were playing Galaxy over the P.A. I think they even played 2x4 and Vernie prior which only adds weight to my claim of how great it was to be there. Being a huge fan since I was 15 (31 now) I don't know if I had any skepticism prior to seeing them live it was very brief if at all. I figured even if Travis couldn't pull off the old songs at least I had the chance to see Rogers, CT, Brad, and Glen Graham together. Which was enough to lure me out of my house alone. The chance to hear the music itself live and be a couple of feet away from one of my favorite bands who's music has helped me grow from a seed to a tree over the past 15-16 years was an honor. I have sang these songs to my little girls since the day they were born and long long before that. I feed my kids Blind Melon the same way my parents fed me Zeppelin, Hendrix, Sabbath and The Beatles. But, I was truly blown away. Travis hit every note and he had great stage presence. It was magic almost as if Shannon was speaking through him. I can not pay him a better compliment. For a long time I have listened to this music and honestly have felt generally bummed out despite the obvious healing properties of the music itself. But, I just kept listening simply because its some of the greatest music ever made plus the need for music that heals is never in short demand for me. But, with the revival of the band and the addition of Travis that stigma is gone and you and I are able to enjoy this music the way it was intended. There were a few Melonheads that didn't come because they suffer from that stigma and I feel sorry for them because as soon as they come to a show that sadness will at the very least lose a bit of its sting. Everything, was perfect Rogers threw a pick hit me right in the chest and landed in my hand then Glens drumstick hit my wife in the head Kinda my fault though I guess I have butterfingers cuz it was in my hand hit my wife in the head landed on the floor and by the time I looked to the ground someone had grabbed it. I must have been a sight I'm walking around in circles looking for the stick and shes sitting there going "what the hell was that"? On the way out we walked right past the bus. And, I begged her please lets just say hi. But, she was cold and she wanted to go. I offered her my coat but she wouldn't take it. So, regretfully I had to go. The next day all day she kept saying man my head hurts. Remember, you got hit in the head with Glen Graham's drumstick....." Oh, Yeah". Although, she got hit in the head it felt some what spiritual. I know that doesn't sound right ha ha. Or they seen that look of shear amazement in my eyes its quite possible because I'm hairy and freakishly tall. I'm just saying that is a scientific hypothesis but, I'm convinced it was spiritual. After finding out Blind Melon will be in Des Moines May 14th were already making plans to be there and I will be bringing some of the Melonhead's I mentioned earlier. I'm sorry for my rambling. I just wanted to address that guy and share my love for Blind Melon they've been so important to me. Oh yeah, this is my first post here .and I want to say hello to this great community. It is nice to see people that love this band as much as I do. I am so happy Blind Melon is back
