do a little research on Roots, i'm not sure but i remember hearing how half the story was fabricated. some parts were overexaggerated, if not made up, and the story about the main character Haley ripped off from some other guy Yeah man over half the story is obviously speculation...I mean there are no written records to show what a man from the Gambia in Africa in the 1700's did while he was there so Haley speculates based on tribal traditions and probably exagerates some parts a bit. There are however ship records to show slave carge from that era at that time. Using this and family oral stories Haley peices together and validates that Kunte Kinte was a slave from the Gambia in the 1700's and he is a direct relative of him. Haley even went to Africa and visited his distant cousins. I find it amazing that he could trace his family history back that far. -CHRIS-

I just got done reading Roots by Alex Haley again.....it remains the best book I've ever read. Lately I've been really into books about mistreatment of African-Americans in the US. Anything from slavery to sharecropping to civil rights is in my current reading list. Roots is on top though. I also am starting this book called The Doors of Perception about mind altering experiences with LSD. Actually a very interesting book so far.
