I've read through this forum for years, but have never taken the time to register and say hello.
Well, it's about time I did.
I've been a Melon fan since the very beginning. I grew up in southern Indiana and went to college just 30 minutes or so from Shannon's hometown. I first saw the "No Rain" video when I was in high school. The video struck me, but I wasn't exactly enthralled with the song.
I picked up the album and was hooked from the very second "Soak the Sin" started. Just one listen to that album and I knew that Blind Melon was much more than "No Rain." I was immediately a life-long fan of the band.
When I went off to college my two roomates were of the mistaken belief that Blind Melon was a band full of hippies that would never be more than a one-hit wonder. They'd only heard one Blind Melon song, after all. I told them if they listened to the first album and "Soup" with me in their entirety, that their minds would be forever changed and that they'd thank me for opening their minds up to a truly great band.
I was right. For two years, you couldn't walk past our dorm room without hearing "Walk" emanating. Collectively, it was our favorite song, with "Mouthful of Cavities" coming in at a close second.
To this day, "Time" and those two songs remain my favorites, though I adore just about every song the band has ever put out, including the rarities that non-fanatics will never hear (Mother, Weeping Like the Willow, etc.).
Anyway, I've been listening to Blind Melon non-stop since 1992. It's one band from which I've never drifted (Tool is the only other band I can say that about).
Like many of you, though I never met Shannon Hoon and only saw him perform live once (in Indianapolis in the winter of 1994), I somehow still feel the pain of his death. I miss him, which is ridiculous since I only know him through his music. I guess you could say I grieve that we didn't get to hear him continue to evolve and make great music for us to enjoy over the years.
I also think it's a shame that the other guys in the band do not get the credit they deserve for their musicianship. But I'm preaching to the choir here. And, for the record, I like Travis Warren and am glad he is here to carry the band forward in whatever way the four living original members see fit. There is no reason for them to refrain from playing their art for their fans, and I just don't get the people who belittle them for doing so.
Anyway, I'm a writer ... and therefore I tend to get carried away and go off on little rants like this when all I really intended to do was say hello.
So, there you have it. My "brief" introduction.
