new guy here. melon is by far on of the most creative bands out there and thirteen years was a long time to wait! i miss shannon very, very much but think travis is also an artist to be rekoned with. shannon's probably dancing in his grave! happy to see his friends playing their songs again. thats my 2 cents.

So everybody has disagreed with me..... saying that Blind Melon should still call themselves Blind Melon and that Travis is truly a talent artist and I need to go see a show for myself..... well, Im willing to bet my next pay check that 80% of you that replied to my original message were not even old enough back in the early 1990's to have even seen the real Melon. So, how can you even compare the shows today to the shows back than??
In 1993 I had front row tickets.... Shannon had a pair of army pants on, no shirt and was bare foot sitting on the enormous speaker just in front of me singing effortlessly into is microphone. That voice, those vibes and those memories will never, ever be re-lived again. We got to hold on to that stuff in our memory banks.
I am glad Blind Melon is back. I just dont like some guy trying to act like he is part of real "Blind Melon". Example...... I am watching a youtube clip from a show about 6 months ago..... Cant remember exactly what song..... Travis is singing and starts making the same hand gesture (thumb and hand going up and down) as shannon always did while singing. If he is his own thing ..... why does he try to recreate shannon?

props to the fact that you were privileged enough to see them in 1993.
age has nothing to do with it. age has nothing to do with a connection you feel with a band and with the music. i am 19. and no other band or artist has ever touched me in the way that blind melon has been able to. Shannon's voice is truly heavenly. can anyone ever be him. no. is anyone tying to be. NO.
we asked if you've been to a show not watched something on youtube. if you go to a show maybe you'll be able to see that no one is trying to be shannon. travis is his own artist and he had proven that time and time again. he has even said that if it were up to him he would be in our shoes watching blind melon with shannon on the stage.
it's clearly pointless to continue with this.
like i've said, we are not here to bash anyone, we are a laid back community.

you were 4 years old when I was at that show. my point exactly. thank you for clarifying it! how could you possibly understand! wont u ask a couple of 35 year olds like me what they think!! im not here to bash you either. just trying to make a point.... from a guy who was around for both era's! the real "blind melon" is still and will always be my #1 band. despite this new "fad"!

hmmm...I wouldn't call it a fad... a fad is something that lasts for a very short amount of time...say 3 months or less...and Blind Melon has been going on for over a decade...and what's this "real" Blind Melon your talking about? I believe, CT, Rogers, Glen, ,Brad and Travis are real...i mean they are real people right? and Shannon was real too- unless they are all figments of my imagination ???lol but im pretty sure they are real and were real back then and still are today...and tomorrow and for as long as we have them breathing and rockin' us out! they will be real from now to infinity and beyond plus 1

Gary,
I understand exactly where you are coming from and cannot blame you for how you feel, I just think before you make up your mind completely that you go to a show and meet Travis. I am not trying to compare Travis to Shannon in anyway and I don't feel that Travis is trying to "replace" Shannon exactly. Travis is very different and very talented in his own ways, he has helped to bring Blind Melon back to the fans after all these years. I was in High School when Shannon passed away, does this qualify me as being old enough to compare the bands? To me its the same band, reborn, with a second chance. Through the years it has saddened me that there will be no more Blind Melon...it was sometimes hard to listen to the music I loved without thinking that this was it. No more. Its a blessing to have this band back together making music again. There will never be another Shannon Hoon, he was one in a zillion. I don't think there will be another Travis either, he is unique in his own ways, I have met him several times and I think of him and the rest of the band as my friends. They are good people, all of them. They deserve this second chance as Blind Melon.
Now months ago when the band got back together and it was announced that they would remain "BLIND MELON" there were so many debates and arguments. Peoples feelings are strong on this subject and this forum was in turmoil. Many of these people who were against it have changed their minds after going to a show. This debate spurs nothing but negative energy and anger, people are just so passionate about the band and Shannon. I think we should just drop this topic and move on. I don't want to see the arguments get out of hand again, everyone is entitled to their opinion of course.

Gary, I have no desire or reason to try and convince you how wrong you are. Fact is you're not, you have your own opinion, but it is a minority opinion around these parts.
So you had a magical melon experience back in '93, cool. Being 40 years old I am old enough to have experienced both eras of Blind Melon. I got to see them in a small club with about 80 people and in huge stadiums. EVERY melon show was like a religious show to me and I had some amazing moments myself. I have seen the new era Blind Melon 5 times now and it is amazing every time! Open your mind and heart a little more and you may realize those moments didn't have to die with Shannon for you.
Does Travis have some of the same mannerisms as Shannon? Yes, he, like a lot of us have Shannon in our souls and it can't help but burst out every now and then. It's the way the music makes us feel. He also has a lot of Maynard James Keenan mannerisms but I don't think he is trying to recreate him.
As the other guys in the band have said, "Travis is the real deal". I would think that you would have to agree that they are more qualified than any of us to make that judgement.
Personally, I have never been skeptical about the "new" Blind Melon. I knew that Brad, Rogers, CT and Glen would never steer us wrong.

I dont think that they should change their name at all. they still have all the original members minus shannon that would be like AC/DC going by a different name. as far as Travis goes... I had a hard time getting use to it at first but he does a wonderful job and he loves shannon just as much as the rest of us...I give him props cus that is some BIG shoe to fill.

come on......yeah, its great to have an opinion and to feel so strongly about your past with blind melon...by the way, i also am a qualifying member of your oldtimer club!! I saw blind melon in 93 also. I just don't get it....if it were possible for Shannon to be here i would love it. The thing is, its not possible. Although Shannon was a huge part of the band, there are 4 other original members who make up the band who are still very much alive and ready to give us their music again!! Its not like they just found some random guy off the street who didnt know anything about the band Travis was the ultimate fan...you know the guy did get shannon's face tattooed on his back. I think that shows a little bit of respect for shannon and his music and memory. If he has some of the same mannerisms, why wouldn't he shannon was a major influence. You know if theyd gotten the new american idol or a backstreet boy i'd understand what you meant. I think travis is perfect for the band...its different but in a good way. Try to open up your mind a little bit more. I havent seen them live yet but i am going Aug. 13. I have no doubt it will be great. Ive seen some of travis's live performances on you tube also and have been nothing but impressed. Its not about replacing shannon, its about embracing a new experience while celebrating shannon!! As for the younger fans...why would you want to talk down or discourage them. We had our time and blind melon became a great part of our memory...Let the new generation make up its own mind. As Travis says "STAY AWAY FROM ALL NEGATIVITY" maybe you should take another listen. Enjoy the new REAL Blind Melon.

Hey guys... We respect everyone's opinions, but this topic has been discussed over and over again. The head admin (Meredith) came in earlier and posted, in hopes to get people to cool down a bit. I'll leave this thread open for a little longer. If it esculates anymore, I'll have to lock it.

Alright, alright..... I do need to go to a show. I agree. But as I look at the tour schedule they are nowhere near Delaware anytime soon. I have two small babies and cant travel to go see them. I will just have to wait to they come this way. In the mean time.... I will continue to pop the new CD in and try to let this new voice grow on me. I apologize if I was steering the new generation of Melon fans away with any negativity. That is far from my intentions!!! I thinks its great that there is a new generation out there that is willing to listen to this type of music..... music that meant something and still does. I was so happy to have found the fan site a few months ago as I thought i was the lone Melon fan. After I started reading through the site it seem like so much attention was focused on the "New" Melon with minimal talk of the old days!! I do need to accept the fact that times change.... people grow.....people die! I will give it a chance.... for real! But I still think nothing will ever come close to that voice that once upon a time effortlessly flowed. (CHILLS). Sorry If I upset any of the young people who never got a chance to see Shannon, I should just be happy there are still people out there who still listen to them old songs. Merideth..... you do qualify as an orginal "but its alright to smile back at me"

Merideth..... you do qualify as an orginal "but its alright to smile back at me" hello I'm new too and I'm not ready to say Travis is better but his voice has the same spirit as Shannon's(not to mention pitch range)...I mean the rest of the band was idle for a long time not only out of respect for Shannon but out of respect for the music they made together...I think having a new name would be kind of cheapening the new music they are making now...I don't mean to beat a dead horse...in fact I was a little worried myself that they wouldn't be as good....Shannon casts an enormous shadow...but then again Shannon was more about sunlight than shadows so what I'm saying is although he was a unique unparalleled force in music he probably wouldn't want to be negative about the new developments in Blind Melon...because I don't think anyone wants to disrespect his memory, they just want to celebrate it

i think it's grate that you opened your mind up to going to a show. it's fantastic! i guess you can kinda call me "new generation"? but i've been listening to this band most of my life, it takes a lot of guts to open your mind to new thing. hey most of us younger melons would of killed to be at at melon show in 1993 to bad i was only 4 hahaha.
and don't worry, shannon is very much so alive in all of us. hope to meet you at a melon show this fall!
