This is a link to a website that has groups in almost every city.. if not, you can start one. What it does is allows people in the same town/city to offer things from their home that they don't need to others who can use it. You can also make requests for things that you could really use. I've been a part of freecycle for a few years now and I've seen people give away alot of nice things.. baby stuff, bikes, clothes, instruments, kitchen supplies... almost anything. It saves alot of stuff from being dumped into landfills. freecycle.org/

www.trynova.org/NOVA is the "National Organization for Victim Assistance". They are a non-profit organization that offers help to victims of crime, witnesses of crime, mental health patients, people with disabilities that were either abused or taken advantage of and people who are suffering in a crisis like hurricane disasters or floods.

I thought that this would be a nice thread to start but I wasn't sure where to put it. I was going to post it in sleepyhouse but it's technically not links to personal pages or blind melon related.. so I will post here. I wanted to start a thread where we could post links to different organizations/groups that help others whether it be charities, fundraisers/habitat for humanity..whatever. I like helping others out and I want to share info with you all as well as learn about more groups as well. Anything that someone has started that works towards a good cause.. post it up. You are so awesome~ #smileyhug#

I just noticed this thread was bumped up in the special threads THANKYOU! Yes THANK YOU it's a great thread and Shana started it so here Shana #smileyhug# I saw something about Avon on here, but I'm not even going to try and find it #eyes# . Avon has so far donated 350 million to breast cancer research as well as supporting violence against women causes. It may partner with Habitat for Humanity and give 15 % of it's earnings to this cause. I'm going to a meeting tonight and will find out more. I hope it happens!

This is a great thread~~~ I love contributing to a great cause and now it seems that we have more awareness here on this board in one simple place: this thread! I knew about most f these issues and concerns, but when it is not "in your face" to see or remind you about it, it can be easy to put off until tomorrow. Thank you for bringing more awareness to the organizations who are already devoted to such great causes. We don't have to re-invent the wheel, and we can contribute and get as involved as we can and the info is right at our fingertips. Thank you I will be investigating for sure!

Travel to Africa with Nicholas Kristof Monday, 12 March 2007 New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof is looking for a college student to join him on a reporting trip to Africa. Last year he selected Casey Parks from Mississippi, who traveled with him through Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon and the Central African Republic. Kristof writes that on their trip through central Africa, "Casey and I saw malnourished children, and visited burned-out villages in areas of the Central African Republic that had been caught up in the furies of the spreading Darfur genocide. Pygmy trackers led us through the jungle to see gorillas and elephants, and we managed to be held up at gunpoint by bandits." The impetus behind this program is Kristoff's belief that "American universities do an execrable job preparing students for global citizenship." He notes that "according to a Roper/National Geographic poll, 38 percent of Americans aged 18 to 24 consider speaking another language to be 'not too important.' Sixty-three percent of those young Americans can't find Iraq on a map of the Middle East. And 89 percent don't correspond regularly with anyone outside the U.S." This year Kristof will once again select a college student but will also welcome a schoolteacher (from either a middle school or high school) for a journey that will include stops in Rwanda, Burundi and Congo. Kristof explains, "If you win the trip, you won't be practicing tourism, but journalism. You'll blog and prepare videos for the New York Times and MySpace Web sites. I'm betting that you'll be able to connect with young readers and viewers - and galvanize them to care about these issues - in a way that I can't." The full details will soon be available at www.nytimes.com/winatrip and at www.myspace.com/kristofontheground.

APRIL 11th is NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION - focusing mainly on Victoria's Secret! Join the April 11th Day of Action! Victorias Dirty Secret activists will be joining forces and planning actions across the country. No action is too big or too small. Add your action to the list! Get Involved in the Campaign If you'd like to help out but you're unavailable on April 11, no problem! Flyer, deliver a letter, host a demonstration, mail and fax the company, and tell your local media about the campaign. What You Should Know About Victoria's Dirty Secret: Approximately 395 million catalogs are mailed by Victoria's Secret each year--that's more than one million a day. Most catalogs end up in the trash or recycling--often without even being looked at. Almost all of these catalogs are produced from virgin fiber paper with little or no recycled content. Paper for these catalogs is destroying Endangered Forests like the great northern Boreal forest of Canada. Victorias Secret is not satisfied with just stripping the Boreal, it is also destroying forests in the Southern U.S. The Southern U.S. is one of the most biologically diverse regions of our country where nearly six million acres of forest are logged each year, primarily for the production of paper. Indigenous people are being negatively impacted by the logging and paper production industries. Native plant and animal populations are being destroyed by logging and processing operations and the pollution they create. Because of its immense buying power, Victoria's Secret is in a position to help change the catalog industry toward sustainable paper purchasing. The company has refused to make commitments to protect our Endangered Forests. What We're Demanding of Victoria's Secret and Limited Brands: End purchases from any company that is not identifying and halting logging in Endangered Forests in the Canadian Boreal; Maximize post-consumer recycled content in catalogs (achieve 50% post-consumer recycled in five years); Ensure that all suppliers are shifting to Forest Stewardship Council certification; End the use of any forest products sourced from other Endangered Forests, such as key areas of the Southern U.S. Reduce paper use How You Can Take Action: Speak out- click here to send an email to CEO, refer your friends to the campaign, and find out how to reduce the amount of catalogs you receive. Take ACTION TODAY! April 11th, today is the national day of action! There are 225+ actions going on nationwide make sure to hook up with a local demonstration, or make a creative one of your own! Contact our friends at Forest Ethics for more information: www.victoriasdirtysecret.net/
