Heh, I figured this one out while messing around with my capo trying to play the Mountain Goats version of "The Sign."
Capo up 14 frets and strum a D, G, A, them pick:
E--------5--------------------- B------------------------------ G------------------------------
Yeah, that's all I've figured out. I'm not sure if it's pitch perfect with BMs version, but I think it is with the original.

excelent! i dont have a capo but definitively those are the intro chords.
the verse chords and all the song are D and G.
