I just need to rant about this real quick. My husband just informed me that the classic rock station he listens to every day in his work truck has changed format overnight to country. Luckily I have satellite radio so I haven't listened to commercial radio in about two years...but he is stuck listening to it. He's so pissed right now. The only alternative he has is this weak ass top 40 rock station...until next week when he starts his new job and can hook his cd player back up. Clear Channel is single handedly ruining radio for everyone in America. If you don't already have satellite, please get it. I have SIRIUS and it's awesome. NO commercials on the music stations, it's uncensored, and they actually play the stuff you want to hear. There is so much more cool stuff about it but I won't get into here unless anyone has questions. I wish everyone would raise their middle finger to Clear Channel and get satellite. It's worth every penny and it doesn't cost that much. Clear Channel Blows! #blowjob#

That really sucks sonya. Hope the day gets better for you and husband! I've been a satellite radio fan for a while now too. It's just so much better in my opinion too. I just got so sick of never finding any good songs on and the commercial just pissed me off.

I actually just listened to Howard Stern the other day on SIRIUS for the first time. I know he's been on for awhile but usually my kids are in the car with me so I can't listen to that kind of stuff. If you're a fan of Stern it's totally worth it to get SIRIUS. They have an entire station devoted to him. I think some of the Wack Pack have broadcast their own shows...ridiculous!!! You can also listen to SIRIUS through the internet if you have an account for satellite radio, but you can only hear the music stations. If you have Dish Network satellite t.v. you also get the SIRIUS music channels for free. You can't hear the comedy, talk, or news stations either of those ways, but if you buy a home kit you can bring your receiver in from you car and hear all of the extra stations inside. FYI the comedy, talk, and news stations do play commercials but it's not ridiculous. I remember listening to Stern on regular radio and his commercial breaks were literally 10 minutes long. It's not bad like that on SIRIUS and the commercials are pretty much just to promote their other stations and events that are happening. I am in love with satellite radio and I highly recommend it to everyone who is thinking about getting it. I appreciate it the most when my family drives 10 hours from N.C. to Tennessee to visit my family and we have good radio to listen to the entire time and I don't have to constantly be the d.j. trying to figure out what cd to play next.

Hello Sonyagirl & everyone, Amen to that! They (C.Channel) DO suck. They pretty much have a monopoly on the radio stations here in & around Memphis (& lots of other places too I'm sure) as well as billboard advertising. Not to mention, most of your concerts, motorsports events, etc. are C.C. controlled. I have been wanting to get Sirius since Howard went over to satellite so hopefully I will be able to soon. Have a great day everyone! -J.

I think I pay around $12/month but I'm not totally sure because I pay for a year at a time and I think that's what it comes out to. Usually you get discounts if you pay for your subscription in advance...like for so many months or years at a time. You can also pay month to month and cancel if you don't like it.
If you're thinking about getting it check out the different promotions they have going on. Usually you can get either a free receiver or a couple months free or a decent rebate. I thought about it for over a year before I finally decided to go ahead and buy it. I've never regretted it and I think the cost is well worth it. I bought mine at Best Buy two years ago. A couple months ago I upgraded to a new receiver because it had so many cool features on it. Usually Best Buy does promotions where they will install it for free. My husband installed ours by himself.
I'm not sure why there are commercials on some of the channels....they are not on the music channels though (at least on SIRIUS). I'm pretty sure that XM plays commercials on their music stations which is part of the reason I didn't buy it. I also chose SIRIUS over XM because I thought their variety of stations was better. I thought XM seemed to be a little more commercial...like appealing to the MTV crowd...I think SIRIUS plays better music for a person who really loves music.
What is really cool now is that with the receivers that they have out there are a lot of really cool features. When a band comes on that you like you just press the MEMO button and the band gets stored in the memory so whenever they get played the receiver alerts you. My receiver holds 30 artists or songs (for if you only want to be notified when one particular song is playing) in the memory.
Another cool feature is that you can pause, fast forward, and rewind as you're listening. If you're into sports they will notify when your favorite teams are being broadcast.
I think it's definitely worth it if you spend a lot of time driving.

Hey Sonyagirl & everyone, Yep the Sirius receivers are REALLY cool. My best friend has Sirius & a really nice receiver (makes me very invious!). And he showed me how you can have it alert you to your favorite artists & songs & how you can record a show so you do not miss it. I think that is only on certain receivers but damn it sure is cool! Also, I know that when I was looking to get one(before the $ I had set aside was spent on bills!), they had a deal where you could get a Lifetime Membership for like $500. I'm not sure if "Lifetime" means forever (would think/hope so), but if so & you knew that you would use it & enjoy it, I think it would be worth it in the long run.

P.S. verbalpocketplay, Not sure if you know or not, but Howard now has an On Demand Channel on cable (I'm guessing it is everywhere & not just in this area?). So you can see & hear him at his dirty, filthy best. I definitely do not agree with EVERYTHING that he says(about women & handicapped, etc.) but I do share alot of the same views on many topics & I love his sense of humor & the fact that he is willing to carry on a conversation with a 10 year old kid as much as he is with a celebrity. Alot of people think that the filthy stuff is ALL he talks about but that is not the case. He is actually a pretty smart guy & definitely worth checking out if you have Sirius. Funny stuff.

They did that to the 2nd rock channel in Chicago about 8 months ago I don't know if it was Clear Channel but I have heard bad stuff about that company on radio talk shows like Mancow. (Chicago's Howard Stern)

Sonya, I hope your husband figures something out that will get him through. I sure wouldn't want to listen to Billy Ray Cyrus or Toby Keith.. Country stations rarely play the cool country music like Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. Just a whole lot of "butt-rock country". Is there much of a difference between Sirius and XM radios?

Sonya, I hope your husband figures something out that will get him through. I sure wouldn't want to listen to Billy Ray Cyrus or Toby Keith.. Country stations rarely play the cool country music like Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson. Just a whole lot of "butt-rock country". Is there much of a difference between Sirius and XM radios? Believe me, he'd rather listen to a catfight in a construction zone than Billy Ray Cyrus or Toby Keith! You are so right about "butt-rock country" The music coming out of Nashville these days is like Britney Spears and N Sync with cowboy hats and twang. It' pop music...just in a different package. The songs are corny and a lot of them don't write their own songs. My parents live in the Nashville area and they eat that shit up...I can't stand going out there to visit because that's what I get stuck listening to. My parents will chauffer the family around town pointing out the homes of all the country stars and then they get offended when it's somebody we've never heard of. Nothing will put me in a bad mood faster than country pop music. As far as the difference between SIRIUS and XM...I'm not an expert but I know that when I was shopping both of them out, I found that XM aired commercials on their music stations where SIRIUS did not. That was the major factor for me because I HATE commercials. The 2nd factor was that SIRIUS had more rock stations than XM and less R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop. It's been two years since I purchased my subscription so I don't know what's changed since then. I can tell you everything you wanna know about SIRIUS, but my knowledge on XM is limited. I think XM charges a little bit less per month...but when you factor in that you're going to have to listen to more commercials on XM, the price difference makes sense. Why would you pay the same amount for them when one is commercial free and one isn't? Another difference is going to be the celebrities that each system gets on their network...like SIRIUS has Howard Stern and XM doesnt...I'm not sure who they have as their big shock jock personality. SIRIUS has things like a station called Margaritaville that's heavy on Jimmy Buffet, reggae, island music...they also have a seperate Reggae station though. Some of my favorite stations to listen to are Jam On (which plays stuff like Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic, String Cheese Incident, Phish, Bob Marley, etc. I have heard Blind Melon played on this station), there is a station called Coffee House that plays singer/songwriter and acoustic stuff which is where I hear a lot of Tori Amos and Damien Rice and the like, Planet Jazz plays more groovy/spacey jazz like Medeski Martin & Wood or Soulive, there are a lot of different rock stations...Faction plays what I would consider "skater" music like Beastie Boys, Sublime, punk, hip hop (like Wu-Tang or Notorious B.I.G.) - basically all the stuff that my skater friends listen to. Bam Margera and Tony Hawk both have their own shows on that station. There are a couple classic rock stations...one plays more of the hits and the other plays songs that are more obscure. There are some hard rock stations that play Metallica, Tool, etc. There is a Reggae station and a Blues station. There are 3 comedy stations that are uncensored but they do play some commercials. Basically I can tell you that on SIRIUS there is something for everyone. I like how their stations are divided up within genres into many different stations. There's a lot of variety and the fact that it notifies me when my favorite artists are on is the coolest part. Sometimes there will be 5 or 6 things on at the same time that I like and the hard part is choosing which one I want to hear the most. This is totally opposite of commercial radio where I find myself getting frustrated because I search and search and nothing good is on. You can scroll through the different stations and see what's playing on each one before you change the stations and that's a cool feature. Can you tell I love satellite radio???
