I told Greg that guy should have been forced to stand in the back based on principle. Haha, I was thinking the same last time I was on Bryan Adams show. There was a guy in the very front row who was VERY tall! And I was thinking it's not right...and wondering how can he be in the front row not feeling bad about all the people behind him...I know I would, lol. Then again, I was thinking it's his "right", if he wants to be in the front row...but...but...it's not fair and nice for everyone else. Another little ironic anectode from the U2 show. At one moment, a VERY tall guy was standing right in front of me so all I could see was his back cause I'm pretty small. So I said to him something like "hey, I'm small" and he turned to me and said "I'm big" and turned his head back to the stage. It wasn't nice from him but it still made me laugh. Luckily by the time the show started my friend and I managed to get to the third row and the guy was behind us I got a little off topic here... Nice job Shana Where did you find the pic? Quite some of The Avett Brothers songs still remind me of The Beatles White Album (like I told Sonya once). Is it just me or anyone else thought about it? It's not that their music is similar to the White Album but to me there's something about it...

A lot of people compare them to The Beatles. Lately I've read a lot of people saying the Help! album is what they are reminded of. I know very little of The Beatles catalog of music and I don't own any of their albums so I don't really have an educated opinion about it. I can see definitely see where the comparisons are coming from, but I'm not familiar enough with their music to really know for sure. Back to the tall people thing...when Greg and I were at Bonnaroo a few years ago we found a good spot to stand and watch a band called New Monsoon...well as soon as we settled into our spot, this white guy with the HUGEST afro came pushing his way through the crowd and stopped right in front of Greg and decided that was where he was going to stand so Greg's great view was entirely blocked by the 'fro. It was a surreal moment. Imagine trying to watch a concert through this... #lmao#

You should check out the White Album, I recommend this to everyone who didn't yet. It's one of my very favorite albums and it changed my whole idea of The Beatles. Before I heard it, I knew mostly their early songs like Please please me, Love me do etc... and found them annoying pretty quickly. But the White Album, woah! It's a completly different story, I totaly love it! Revolver is great too.

Ok, thanks for the recommendation Barb. As little as I know about The Beatles, I do know that I prefer the music they made after they got into drugs and weren't squeaky clean anymore . I like songs like "Come Together", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", etc. The only album I've listened to from beginning to end is the Sgt. Pepper's album (my best friend in high school had it). I remember that in the Blind Melon interview with Robert Hunter, they were talking about how people were saying that Blind Melon was like The Grateful Dead but they all disagreed with that comparison, Robert Hunter said he felt their album (self-titled) was in the spirit of Revolver. I'm sure that was a huge compliment to them, especially to Brad since he has said many times that he's always been a Beatles fan.

I can't compare Blind Melon to any of The Beatles albums cause Blind Melon are just too special to me and I can't compare them to anything or anyone. Maybe next time when I'll listen to Revolver I'll give it some more attention. Ok, thanks for the recommendation Barb. Did you know that Tori Amos recorded a cover of "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" on her album "Strange Little Girls"? I'll upload it for you if you haven't heard it.

Sweet! I'm really really, trying the Avett Brothers. I think it's something i need to be in the mood for. They are great musicians, and i love the stand up bass. Something tastes very familiar bout it. i just can't pen point it. I feel like it's blue grass punk somehow. It's familiar, but yet somehow new. I'm sure it'll grow on me some more.

I better not start with my favorite songs from the White Album, it would be too hard to choose One of my favorites is I'm so Tired but it's because of the whole feel and because I have some great memories related to it so it's very personal.

I've been meaning to post about "Smoke In Our Lights" forever around here, but glad to see someone has finally done it. I've been an Avett Bros. fan since 2005, seen them live a handful of times, and spreading their music to everyone I can find since.
You cannot top these guys and their songwriting skills NOR live performance skills! At least not in my mind.
Has anyone been able to hear their newest best song "If I Get Murdered In The City"? I know they have a new album just coming out, but I'm already anxious for whatever THIS song is going to be released on!

It's also funny that you compared their music as similar to the sound of "Skinned" or "Walk", because when I was first listening to them 2yrs ago, I mentioned to my wife that they reminded me of Blind Melon. She didn't understand how, so I played her "Skinned" and "Walk", and said "See??" Haha, anyway...at this point not to the same degree anymore, because they only sound like themselves to me after listening to them constantly for so long.

Holidayidol, it's awesome that you're a long time fan although I do have to scold you for a second for not telling us about Smoke In Our Lights sooner! I wish you had told me about them a long time ago, I feel like I've missed out on so much. I agree with you 100% about the songwriting skills and I can't wait to experience my first "real" live show in June. I really don't count the in-store as being the same thing you'll see if you actually see them in a venue. Someone sent Greg and me two dvd's of live performances so we have a pretty good idea of how blown away we're going to be in June. I do recognize a small amount of similarities between them and Blind Melon, but you're right, The Avett Brothers have their own unique sound and at this point they don't sound like anyone but themselves to me. I wouldn't be surprised if I found out that Shannon's songwriting style influenced Scott or if I found out that Shannon's stage presence influenced Seth. I have never been reminded of Shannon's live performances by any band besides The Avett Brothers. Some people might not get that, and I do think the similarities are subtle, but they are very real to me. If I Get Murdered In The City is a great song and it makes me want to cry. Man that song is powerful! Do you plan to go to any of their shows this summer? Do you have Emotionalism yet? It's SO good! I know it's different than their previous stuff, but I am really enjoying it.

I got an advance copy of Emotionalism about 5-6wks ago, and of course it's the greatest thing since....well, their last album! ...and the one before that!
My favorites from Emotionalism are "Die Die Die", "Weight Of Lies", "Go To Sleep". My faves altogether are too many to mention, but include "Please Pardon Yourself (Live)", "Salvation Song", "November Blues (Live)", "Swept Away", "In The Curve", "Backwards With Time"...and certainly "If I Get Murdered In The City".
We chose "Swept Away" (the slow one) as our first dance at my wedding last July.
I've already seen two of their shows in the past month (Williamsburg and Richmond), but hope to attend the September shows they announced for Virginia. If I'm lucky, hopefully before then. You've got it made though, if you're in North Carolina!

My favorites from Emotionalism are "Die Die Die", "Weight Of Lies", "Go To Sleep". Those are 3 of my favorites from Emotionalism as well (especially "Go To Sleep" - I love that song!). Right now I'm also feeling "Paranoia in Bb Major" and "The Ballad of Love and Hate". I know what you mean about having too many favorites to mention them all...it was so hard to make a mix cd. I was able to fit 20 songs on it and I think I need to create a mix vol. 2 now that Emotionalism is out. Some of my most favorites that aren't on Emotionalism are "My Last Song To Jenny", "SSS", "When I Drink", "At The Beach", "Talk On Indolence", "Colorshow", "Matrimony", "Backwards With Time", "Swept Away"...I could go on and on so I'll just stop there. Seriously I don't think it's within their power to write a bad song...there are just some that I like more than others. I don't think I've heard one song of theirs that I can honestly say I don't like. Good choice! I read the setlists for the shows you went to, I'm so jealous! I just saw the new VA dates that were announced. If Greg is off call from work I want to try to go to the Norfolk show. I hope they announce some more NC dates! It seems like lately VA is getting more shows than NC so you are the lucky one!
