I don't know if we did this before so heres who I think is over-rated. I know so of you might/ probably disagree... NIRVANA... I've been listening to my mp3 player everyday @ work, I put all kinda of grunge/alt. rock on it, such as B.M., PJ Harvey, Soundgarden, QOTSA, Kyuss, THESOUNDISAW, U.T.,TOOL, A.I.C. ,STP, TTT, Abandon Jalopy, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees/Mark Lanegan, Mad Season, and Nirvana. After listening to all this music for awhile/ years most of it. I just don't see what's so special about Nirvana. Dave Grohl- great drummer but I think Bleach is their best album & he wasn't on it. So then, I don't think they're all that.

Nirvana were good...just not that good. I personally don't like them at all anymore, they just annoy me now, I kinda grew out of it, or lost any connection to it. It's hard to relate to it when you're happy.
Alot of music nowadays is overated, but luckily it tends to fade out quite quickly.

Personally, I never got into them at all. When I was playing in a bar cover song band, I hated looking down and seeing Lithium or Teen Spirit on the list. I believe Cobain was voted one of the best guitar players of all time too. Give me a break. In my opinion, any 13 year old kid that picks up an electric guitar, and puts 10 hours of practice in, can be just as good as Cobain. Hell, Grohl is a better musician than Cobain was.

That's fucking right matt, he may have a been a good lyricist/frontman, let's forget the singing (though it was good for the style), but playing a few power does not constitute a great guitarist. He played with feeling, which is a major part of guitar playing, but his lack of playing anything requiring skill takes away any scope of putting him in a greatest guitarist list.

And, to boot.. I don't think John Petrucci was even on the list. The douche from the Ramones even made it. Seriously?
Name a style, and this guy has played it, and played it well.

~ good topic Christian ~ all boy bands. . . and I don't mean only bands that have just guys. . . I mean boy bands. . . they just outright suck. . . and they are always overated. . . and they always fizzle out. . . Nirvana - I don't think they were horrible, but they definitely weren't as great as they were made out to be. Cobain was a better writer than a singer or guitarist, imo. . .

i think nirvanas first an last albums were their best work,an i agree with matt on the lack of any kind of technical ability....but it seems like destiny that numerous bands will progress into the spotlight despite obvious failings in the musical ability and lyrics the record labels find a way to market them into mass popularity while genuinely good bands are left to the side

I think that Nirvana are similar to Blind Melon in a way, cause they were overshadowed by Smells Like Teen Spirit... It is not a great sng, but so many people seem to like it... They have got some great songs however, but radio and tv such as Mtv and Vhi down here especially, over use the rest of their collection and keep putting on SLTS, which gets quite annoying. Every rock countdown ends up with SLTS at the end of it...
As for the greatness of this band, i dont know... They were pretty good for their time, which was early 90's... They also started a whole genre of music... But i think that the over-use of SLTS really make people think that "hey these guys are one of the best ever", but this is clearly not true... They were good but there were other bands at the time which i personally believe were better at the time and had to live in Nirvana's shadow, even Blind Melon... I believe that the hype over Nirvana was one that hindered the acknowledgement of Blind Melon in the US, but especially worldwide...

Blind Melon and Nirvana were two totally different bands. They both had their own thing going on, at the same time. But talent-wise, Nirvana couldn't hold a candle to them. I think I could list 20 bands from that era that put Nirvana to shame. It's just unfortunate that Nirvana was crowned the band that turned music around. Hell no. Janes Addiction was doing that before Nirvana was. U2 and REM were both Alternative bands, at that time, that were doing that before Nirvana. Mother Love Bone paved shit for Nirvana. It just so happened that Nirvana had that one lame hit that put them ahead, at that time. But now? ... Forget about it. We have bands that were paving the way for Nirvana, and are still around. Would Nirvana still be huge if Cobain were alive? That all depends on which road they decided to take (kinda like the Pearl Jam thing). I think Dave would have left Nirvana 8 years ago if Cobain was still alive.

I wasn't trying to make a thread where everyone bashes Nirvana even though I like hearing/reading everyones view on them. But if you like live music, you can go out every Friday night and probably see a band better than Nirvana.
Thanks Boba, and you're right Boy Bands make me wanna rip out my ear drums with a fork. But if you look back through history, there are alot of bands that got recognition and out shadowed bands that were alot better , or have songs that kickass/ really good/great but get fucked over by one song such as B.M. with No Rain. Like Steppenwolf has alot of great stuff but all you ever hear is Born to be Wild( which I Hate ). Anyway, who else do you people think is over-rated, my next pick would be GREEN DAY,( do you have the time to listen to me wine) catchy rhyme but hey, they're huge, people like them, and I don't so what do I know but what I do know is that Matt Theberge has more talent stuck betweens his toes than all 3 of those guys put together.

Wow. Thank you man!!!
And, yes... Green Day is very Overrated. They are also another band that I never found a "big deal"... I guess they brought Punk to Alternative music during that time.

HA i think the same about nirvana. they didn't start a new genre of music, they were just the first to get played on mtv. i agree with matt in that there were loads of bands who had the sound and idea going on way way before nirvana. the only real musical talent really was grohl. i don't think the song writing is great either. cobain was just this bored, depressed, junkie icon that teenagers related to and the media seemed to love. his songs were catchy but maybe a bit meaningless. but i like em, but they are over-rated.
yeah green-day just doesn't get old with the teenagers. their music just appeals to the 13-16 year olds, which watch the most mtv and buy the most cd's, they're a fucking cash cow for their company. the music is fun, catchy, but pretty asinine. i saw them on the warped tour back in 2000 (when i was 15 hehe) and they did kick my ass. the crowd was wild and they put on a great show. the shows are fun and the band is really cool and into it, so i guess that's a plus.

Yeah I've given Nirvana a fair chance and their songs to me are just boring, mediocre, and forgetable. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden put Nirvana to shame. Anything from Facelift is better than any Nirvana song and Down in a Hole is just amazing.
Besides Nirvana I'd have to say The Rolling Stones. First a knighthood to Jagger which was a disgrace and leaves me thinking wtf? They should have called it quits three decades ago instead they continue to torture us with crappy music and overpriced, bad concerts. Not even worth a chance to me.....

I totally agree with you Chris... Being around for half a decade, you would think that they would come up with more songs than Satisfaction and Start Me Up... Pleeeeease...
I still like Green Day, but hey, im still a teenager... Their last album was not as good as their earlier stuff though...

ok this band maybe isn't too over-rated, but they (the media outlets) seem to make the biggest deal whenever they come out with a new album, like it's the second coming or something. Weezer. They had the blue album which is just one of those albums you kinda grow up listening too. Song for song it is a great album, if you're into that kind of music. I mean for a first album you'd think the band would just have a huge career making great music. But everything after it sucked. Well pinkerton was ok. But all the other albums are trash. What a fall from grace. Plus i heard they suck live.
