I thought that Shannon had a more deep impact on Axl's life from watching the live preformance of Don't cry with gnr featuring Shannon. I was wrong, this just proved despite the shitty childhood that axl had and how he acts like a big victim he still managed to be shallow and a dickhead, he could have be more supportive in the weeks after Shannon's death by talking about how great he was instead of being passive agressive about taking the spotlight if he were to attend his funeral.

Well I'm a huge GN'R fan, actually thats how I got into Blind Melon. Anyways, I have a lot of bootlegs and Shannon sang with Guns quite a few times. Not to mention he sang on a lot on the Illusions, more than just Don't Cry. So I think they are more than just an aquitance.

I believe Glen said that the two of them weren't close at all.

Well I belive more Glen than what fans think and suppose (don't take this personal, A LOT of people think they were close friends and I did too before Glen cleared it up). None of the fans were there, Glen was. Another thing he said about GN'R: joel's question: Glen's answer: Link to the original post: blindmelons.proboards19.com/index.cgi?board=glensblog&action=display&thread=1165914499&page=4And welcome to the forum theelectricsintar! #welcome#

I saw what Glen said about in the questions thread. However, there is a few minutes of the 1991 Chip Midnight interview where Chip asks Shannon about the whole GNR thing. Shannon takes the time to talk about Axl, how Axl took him under his wing a little bit when he got to LA bc they were from the same town. Shannon acknowledges that Axl was more a friend of his sister back in Lafayette, but does say that some of the advice Axl had given him since comming out to LA had been very bennificial for young band starting out (Remember this is Fall 1991) and that Axl has helped steer the band (Blind Melon) away from people in the industry who are "Black Ass Crooked". Shannon also talks about being invited to the Illusion sessions and saying that vibe was just really cool so it turned out that he sang backup on more than one song..obviously Don't Cry but also others - off the top of my head You Ain't the First is the one that always comes to mind bc you can really hear Shannon in the background if you listen really close on that one. I think he sang on the The Garden and some others. Later, he also mentions that getting the opening gig for a GNR tour would be a "dream tour" for him personally and that it would feel like one big happy family on the road.
I am just summarizing what i have listened to shannon say in this interview.
Now, this is 1991....just before Axl's ego spiraled completely out of control. However, at this point Shannon talks about the relationship with Axl as if it is a good one. Was he just saying that in an interview bc he didn't want to say anything bad about Axl after what GNR had just done for him? Possible....Shannon's whole tone in that interview is so young and innocent (it sounds to me anyway) but my take is that Axl and Shannon hooked up when Shannon got to LA, and they hit it off having known of each other in the past and being from the same hometown. On top of that, Shannon could really sing so I'm sure Axl saw that as an opportunity. As was mentioned, Shannon sang live with GNR on a few occasions and just from everything we know about Axl - there is just no way he would have invited Shannon to be featured in the Don't Cry video if there wasn't a genuine relationship there. That relationship may have waned or faded over the next few years - Gnr launched a massive 3 year tour that didn't end till '94, and Blind Melon released a video called No Rain that blew their shiz up - so both guys were busy.
haha...sorry for the novella, but i have thought about this alot. My favorite band before Blind Melon was GNR and I have always been fascinated by how the two bands have that weird connection with each other.

Hey, thanks for this post Keith, I wanted to mention (but then I forgot) that the band said how Axl helped them out in the beginning because he had more experience with music buisness and gave them good advices so that no one would screw them. I think it was on one of the dvds too but maybe I just confused it with the interview you're talking about. However, I'd never tell it with so much details cause I forgot a lot of it so it was cool to read this. I suppose Shannon and Axl had a good relationship but weren't really friends. Then again, Axl never performed Don't Cry live after Shannon died so Shannon probably meant a lot to him (supposing Shannon's death was the reason he stoped performing this song)

Thanks, proud to be part of the forum.
I dont know if anyone of you have seen the making of the Don't Cry video, but if you havent, its something you should def check out cause Shannon is interviewed on there. It's a great watch.
Also, for those who have opinions about Axl, you can get a pretty good glimpse of the guy that Axl is from that video.
It seems that Axl and Shannon developed a pretty good friendship. Obviously it was nothing like the one Axl has with Del James or whatever, but I still think they were pretty good friends.
As far as Glen knowing Axl doesnt really answer whether the fact that him and Shannon were good friends. It was Shannon who was hanging out with Guns, not the whole band.
Also another cool little story. Blind Melon opened for GN'R in '93 and at one of the shows in Europe him and Axl made some sort of bet. I guess Shannon lost the bet so he came out for "Used To Love Her" and played the congas naked. I wish there was some video of that, it would be pretty funny to watch.
Also, last year Axl and Sebastian Bach did an interview on Eddie Trunk's radio show. Sebastian was telling this story about how Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wanted the Supergroup band to Out On The Tiles, but he wanted to do Whole Lotta Love cause he felt it was better for his range. Then Axl interupts and says "What do you mean good for your range, thats a pretty big parking space." or something along those lines. And then Sebastian says how one time they were hanging out back in the day, Axl was telling Sebastian how he had to meet and hear Shannon, saying that he had a higher voice than him. I thought that was pretty cool.
